The Eco-Leadership Institute is a think-tank, a developmental hub, and a change agent.

About us

Eco-Leadership offers an innovative new leadership approach for the digital age. The Eco-Leadership Institute is founded to support Eco-Leadership formation, to train coaches to support Eco-Leaders, and to work directly with leaders and organisations on culture change to adapt to technological, social and environmental disruptions and challenges. Eco-Leadership was identified by Dr. Simon Western in the first edition of Leadership: A Critical Text (2008) as a new leadership paradigm for our times. He went on to develop theory and practice of Eco-Leadership to provide an ethical leadership approach orienting organisations towards delivering success in our networked and interdependent world. This means unleashing leadership across the whole organisation and beyond to create more participative, energised and agile organisations. The task is to re-imagine the organisation as an ecosystem within wider ecosystems (e.g. business, technological, environmental, social & customer ecosystems). The outcome is more participative organisations, working with Eco-Leadership cultures that focus on connectivity, creativity and collaboration within and beyond the organisation. Social purpose is at the heart of the Eco-Leadership approach as organisations are interconnected and interdependent with wider society and the environment.

Join us for our monthly webinar on 12 November when we welcome Leslie G. to discuss Dreamwork and Coaching. Dreams are a precious resource, offering us information, guidance and insight from our unconscious every night (and sometimes during daylight, too). What is the place of dreamwork in coaching? Do you ever ask coaching clients about their dreams?  Have you ever dreamt about a client? This webinar will introduce some Lacanian-informed practical approaches to working with dreams in the context of coaching engagements. Avid dreamworkers and those who rarely if ever recall or work with dreams are equally welcome. This webinar follows Leslie’s prior sessions on applications of Lacanian theory to the practice of coaching. While the body of Lacanian theory is vast and has a reputation for being dense and difficult to understand, Leslie will distil a few kernels to stimulate practitioners’ thinking and offer ideas that can be immediately applied.  This webinar will be useful even for those who have never previously heard of Lacan. Follow the link to learn more & to register: https://lnkd.in/eGprBMf7 We hope you can join us!

We'd like to invite you to a free workshop tomorrow on Institutionalisation and Conformity of Thinking which is part of our Psychodynamics of Humanitarianism Workshop Series in partnership with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy. This workshop focuses on Institutionalisation and conformity of thinking. We all work in organisations, and in some ways are 'conformed' to the cultures we live and work in. However, too much conformity leads to institutionalised ways of thinking and working. This can prevent the innovation and change that is needed. INGOs are often accused of pushing agendas from the centre, without listening to those at the edges of the humanitarian systems. Institutionalisation and conformity of thinking can be explicit power plays or a much more subtle form of culture control. The dangers are self-evident; diverse experiences and voices are shut down, preventing local and specific responses that are needed to address particular challenges and contexts. Global North-led INGOs also experience institutionalisation and conformist pressures within their own organisations, that constrain autonomy and innovation. This workshop aims to create a space to explore these and other issues. Follow the link to register (it is a free event): https://lnkd.in/gF8Meth4

Another working week passes by: What was it for? Was your work purposeful? Was it mixed? Was it empty of purpose? Did you feel like you belonged to a team? Did you feel valued? What value did you contribute to others? Or are these questions bourgeois nonsense? Is the purpose of work to pay your bills, in order to live as well as you can outside of the iron cage? What is it #Work for? How much should you invest yourself in it? We will explore some of these questions at our pioneering Soul at Work event 3 days starting 8th Nov nr Barcelona We have a few places left - could be the opportunity to make some choices about what life and work means for you Brochure https://lnkd.in/e8iJdxV9 Registration https://lnkd.in/e48NXW8X

Re-enchantment is a process of rediscovering meaning, wonder, and deeper connection in spaces that have become overly-rationalized, or disenchanted. Simon Western, founder of the Eco-Leadership Institute and host on Edgy Ideas has joined Trumanitarian host Lars Peter Nissen in our latest convo. They discuss "helpless helping" - the illusion of aid that soothes our consciences while the real fires rage on. Simon’s eco-leadership model reminds us that genuine transformation doesn’t trickle down from the top - it erupts from the edges. It’s the small acts of courage in the margins, it’s listening to your discontent and using it to breathe life back into the system. In a time where the humanitarian empire is crumbling, and risk matrices suffocate creativity, we should try and resist the urge to stabilise the status quo. Instead, we should try and ignite the fringes to bring energy, creativity and momentum to the edges of a system, ultimately influencing and challenging the centre. That’s what Simon says. Re-enchant your work, lead with soul, and embrace the beauty of a precarious, interconnected world. The first of three 'Re-enchanting Organisations' events is fast approaching. Our Soul at Work event will take place at a convent in Northern Spain on November 8th-10th, and we invite you to join us. We will create a temporary faith community and provide a supportive space for participants to reflect on their desires, what they want from their work and life, how to engage their soulfulness, and connect with like-minded others in a very special place. Soul at Work is a response and a refusal to accept the disenchanted world we live in. The Eco-Leadership Institute is focusing its work on re-enchantment, believing that no deep change is possible until we rediscover our collective capacity for soulful work. It is the first of our Re-enchantment Trilogy Events, that aim to replenish, re-imagine and re-ignite our spirituality, our connectivity with nature, and our creativity. Bringing our soul to work is an opportunity to encounter ourselves and others, exploring how we engage our spirituality. Leslie Brissett (0)and Hetty Einzig will join Simon Western in holding this space. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eXb94NJ4 Bonus: We will have film-maker and photographer Nic Askew attending, who will be collaborating with us to try and capture the soul of our work, and has offered an individual 'Soul' portrait to all participants.

The first and perhaps greatest challenge we have when working to lead change in organisations is to re-imagine organisations as ‘ecosystems within ecosystems’. This short thought piece by Simon Western explores the vibrant, fluid, overlapping, energy-consuming and energy-producing ecosystems in which organisations exist. We hope you enjoy the read! Our latest edition of the Edgy Ideas Podcast is out now and features Gabriella Braun, Driector of Working Well, a specialist consultancy firm using psychoanalytic and systemic thinking to help leaders and teams. Listen in as Gabriella and Simon discuss psychoanalysis and humanising the workplace. In this episode, Gabriella delves into her fascinating journey, sharing her insights from her latest book, All that We Are: Uncovering the Hidden Truths Behind Our Behaviour at Work. She discusses how psychoanalytic principles can provide deep insights into organisational dynamics and group behaviour, influencing everything from leadership to team cohesion. Her emphasis on emotional awareness highlights its critical role in effective coaching, while she explores how vulnerability in professional environments can foster stronger connections and transform group interactions. Gabriella also touches on societal issues, emphasising the need for sensitivity and awareness in addressing them within organisations. The discussion centres on the broader theme of living a balanced, meaningful life, where understanding human desire and behaviour, curiosity, and playfulness contribute to workplace success and a more connected, compassionate society.
