Not-for-profit, educational organization for Group Relations in the USA
About us
The A. K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems® (AKRI) is the educational, not-for-profit organization for Group Relations in the United States. The Institute's educational mission is the study of how unconscious thoughts and feelings significantly impact our lives when we are in groups—from family to workplace to nation. AKRI aims to deepen our understanding of complex social behaviors by providing experiential learning opportunities called Group Relations Conferences, as well as through research, publications, symposia, professional meetings, organizational consulting, experiential workshops, leadership training, and Group Relations consultant certification. Based on over 60 years of theory, research, and practice, Group Relations is an applied discipline that integrates open-systems theory and psychodynamic perspectives as a lens through which to view human behaviors in groups. Derived from the work of the British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion, Group Relations can provide dazzling insights into the complex mysteries of the human psyche as it manifests in groups. Through those insights, one develops an increased capacity to navigate the challenges of today's increasingly complex and diverse neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, communities, and societies. AKRI's focal interest, study, and training includes leadership, authority, organizational structure, boundaries, roles, work tasks, and the unconscious processes which give rise to non-rational behavior in individuals, groups, and organizations. Functions of the Institute include regular annual meetings, co-sponsorship of regular international meetings, and the authorizing and conducting of Group Relations Conferences, which are temporary institutions designed and formed to study the behavioral dynamics of groups, and individuals within groups, as they represent aspects of larger social systems ranging from family, local community, and business to multi-national corporation, country, society, and global.

On October 1, I will begin a three year term as a member of the board of directors of the A. K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems (AKRI). AKRI is the largest group relations organization in the United States and has a proud history of sponsoring leadership development conferences all over the country. I'm joining the board at an important time in which we are considering how to keep the learning methodology relevant and sustainable, how to use it ethically with communities of color and other marginalized groups, and how to reach groups who haven't historically been a part of our community. Those who know me well know how passionate I am about this work. There is something about a weekend or week long conference away from home that unlocks new possibilities for learning and connecting deeply. I'm humbled by the opportunity to represent my local affiliate, the Washington Baltimore Center for the Study of Group Relations (WBC), and the other affiliate groups across the country on the board. WBC has historically been the BIPOC and queer voice in this work, and I was moved by that group's faith in me and my leadership. Group relations has given me community, self knowledge, cultural humility, and the ability to understand organizations and systems in ways I never thought possible. It's an honor to serve and give back in this way. I'm hoping to use my term to create more spaces for affiliation for members, to advocate that AKRI do more to support its affiliates, to create best practices for conference marketing and sustainability, and to continue the conversation about how group relations theory needs to expand and grow to hold the experiences of all identities that show up in organizational life.

I am honored to receive a three conference contract as director of the group relations program at California State University, Dominguez Hills. CSUDH is a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) with a proud history of educating students who have historically been underserved by higher education. This population focus dovetails with my own experience as a first generation college and graduate student with Latinx heritage. When I thought of a theme for my first conference of the series, I wanted to push the envelope by studying gender expansiveness. While trans, nonbinary, queer, and gender expansive folx inhabit our institutions, organizations, and workplaces, their experiences are often marginalized and go unspoken. Cis and straight allies also have organizational challenges related to gender that frequently go unexpressed and unworked. This conference aims to target these realities directly for study. We hope to create a safe enough container for attendees to learn about power and authority in organizations through a gender expansive lens. Consider putting April 10-13 on your calendar and join us in Southern California. Registration details are forthcoming. I'm grateful to CSUDH and GREX (West Coast affiliate of the A.K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems) for sponsoring this vital work.
