Tourism and hospitality businesses are generally really good at storytelling - in-person and online. They have great material to work with! Yet, telling their Sustainability Story is one of their biggest pain points. Why? The first question we ask at the start of all our sustainable tourism training programmes is 'What do you want to walk away with from this learning journey?' Without fail, a large number of participants will say something like 'to know how to tell my sustainability story' or 'to know how to talk about all this stuff'. In response, we usually ask 'Why do you hesitate to tell your Sustainability Story? You're good at storytelling, many of you have done a lot in this area, you don't hesitate when it comes to other parts of your business - why do you find it so difficult?' Here's what they say: 🏵Others know much more about this than me - who am I to talk about it? 🏵Who will listen? Does anybody really care? 🏵How would I word it? I don't speak the language. 🏵Customers don't like change - I don't want to draw attention to it. 🏵Don't I need to be able to measure whatever I'm talking about 🏵Isn't 'sustainability' a kind of negative word? 🏵Somebody might shoot me down for not being green enough. When we understand the barriers people experience in this area, we can address them in our training and overall supports. While we devote a module to it (with practitioner trainer Irene Hamilton MBA BSc), we also aim to naturalise the conversation and allow people get comfortable with speaking about what they do, why they do it and the impact they are having or hope to have. We had a great day earlier this week with a dynamic group of tourism businesses from #Ballyhoura, as we launched the accredited Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Destinations. A big thanks to Visit Ballyhoura, Ballyhoura Development CLG and Fáilte Ireland #IrelandsHiddenHeartlands for the opportunity to partner with this great group on their collective sustainability journey. We were also delighted to have Tj OConnor from the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Department at Munster Technological University (MTU) join us, as he welcomed the cohort to the MTU student body. This innovative programme, accredited by Munster Technological University as a Level 6 Special Purpose Award, is all about helping tourism networks and clusters get moving and build momentum on their collective sustainability journey. Over the next 3 months, participants will share a learning journey covering key topics like climate action, carbon footprint reduction, resource management, biodiversity, accessibility and inclusion and community engagement. Throughout, we'll also facilitate learning on that topic that so many businesses find challenging: sustainability storytelling. 📖🌍 Each participant will walk away, not only with their MTU qualification, but importantly with their own Sustainability Action Plan, tailor-made by themselves based on a slow, considered process of prioritisation. 🌿 Exciting Milestone! 🌿 Last week, our first Autumn cohort of the Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Destinations got underway, with members of the inspiring Carlow Garden Trail. 🌸 This innovative programme, accredited by Munster Technological University as a Level 6 Special Purpose Award, is all about helping tourism networks and clusters get moving and build momentum on their collective sustainability journey. A full-day session, we kicked off with a deep dive into the 'Concepts of Sustainable & Regenerative Tourism' and explored ways to reduce environmental impact with our 'Introduction to Energy Conservation & Energy Management' session. ⚡🌱 Over the next 3 months, participants will share a learning journey covering key topics like climate action, carbon footprint reduction, resource management, biodiversity, accessibility and inclusion and community engagement. Throughout, we'll also facilitate learning on that topic that so many businesses find challenging: sustainability storytelling. 📖🌍 Each participant will walk away with their own Sustainability Action Plan, tailor-made by themselves based on a slow, considered process of prioritisation.
