It's been an emotional week, one of many I've had in my twenty-two years working in the social care sector. You'd think it gets easier, and sometimes it does but the unpredictable nature of our work can sometimes make it feel like we've been hit by a bus no matter how strong we may be or despite many years of experience. Emotional hangovers can also happen in our personal lives of course but there are few other occupations where we are so empathetically involved in the lives of often vulnerable and traumatised individuals daily. I'm often asked if I have a supervisor... The answer is a resounding 'YES'!. I couldn't do what I do without good quality professional supervision from a qualified practitioner. I'm human too, and need a confidential space for my own learning and development in my role as an external supervisor, mentor and advisor. I also need a restorative space for the difficult stuff. The nature of the work that my clients do can be very challenging, in order for me to provide a space for them to feel held, I need to also feel held. Does that mean I'm divulging my clients private, confidential information? Absolutely not, but it does mean that I can discuss the impact of the work on me, for me to be challenged and to learn and develop my practice and enhance my service. When I'm in good hands, so are my clients, much like putting my own oxygen mask on first!
