Yesterday, Professor Eran Friedler and myself, presented at the Technion sustainability conference, how breakthrough technological research, led to a system that produces 1,000 liters per day of high-quality drinking water from a free and renewable resource - the atmosphere. What's the big deal with the new #USEPA #PFAS regulation? Here's my 50 cents on the subject- not only for water quality nerds. Happy to hear your opinion: 1. 🔬 Very strict: The limits set by EPA for 4 selected PFAS in drinking water (PFOA, PFOS, Gen-X & PFBS) are VERY low (4-10 PPT = ng/L). This is about 1000 times lower than the standard for almost any water pollutant, anywhere. In addition to the individual limits, there is also a limit for all 4 PFAS together under a new Hazard Index. That sets an incredibly challenging target for any technology and any water supplier. 2. 🏈 National precedent: the PFAS standard is national, unlike most US water regulations which are set by each state (i.e ~50 different regulations). For PFAS, the EPA took the pioneering decision to set the bar equally low for all states regardless of their current regulation. That could lead to a uniform water standard in the US one day. 3. 🌏 Global leadership: the USEPA PFAS rules are much stricter than in any other country (X10 lower or more). So the US set a new bar that other countries will have to consider when setting their own limits for PFAS, and possibly other pollutants in the future. 3. ⏰ Crazy timeline: Not only that the EPA limits are so challenging, but they have allowed only 5 years for #water #utilities to comply. The capital, technology and operational aspects are staggering. 4. 🚀 Goodby BAT: the new PFAS rules are unique by not adopting the BAT paradigm which has been the basis for most environmental regulations for decades. Instead of looking at available technologies and setting limits that can be achieved economically today (and then gradually negotiate stricter rules as technology slowly advances), the EPA set super-low limits based on health risks and challenge the industry to adapt quickly. If it works, this may change regulatory concepts in water and other environmental fields. That's a bold, almost revolutionary exercise. 5. 💡 Technology gap: Only a handful of separation technologies like GAC, RO and IX exist to deal with PFAS today, at scale. None of these were developed for this task. Monitoring and destruction methods are way behind. This vaccume will need to fill fast. 6. 💰 Money is on the table: we're possibly looking at the 1st time when regulation is set while allot of money is already available for action. Billions of $ from legal settlements with PFAS producers (11 $B) and federal budgets (9 $B) are there to be invested in solutions. It's not even close to what's needed for solving the problem (estimated 48 B$, in the US only), but a great start for deploying projects and novel solutions quickly. There is no other water issue that get such funding so fast. Bottom line: PFAS is set to change the way water (and other environmental issues) are regulated, financed and scaled.
