This work integrates the novel idea of curiosity into clustering based on features, where tabular data is segmented into sub-matrices in an optimal data-driven way. We show that if there are underlying hidden structures in the data, this algorithm uncovers them in an automatic way. In the Curiosity Lab, we are curious about curiosity. Our goal is to understand, model and create curious agents. By implementing state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, we build models of curiosity. With these models, we try to understand and promote human curiosity-driven behavior. We implement the same models on robots and watch them interact and learn about themselves, their environment and other agents. Our interdisciplinary research integrates computer science, developmental and cognitive psychology, and robotics. We study, implement, expand and integrate supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning algorithms. We investigate infant, chidren and adult curiosity-driven behavior when interacting with novel information and technology and try to promote curiosity-driven behavior. We use various commercial robots, such as Lego Mindstorm, NAO and Baxter, to create curious agents that constantly, optimally and actively learn about their environment. ✍️🤓Gvirsman, O. and Gordon, G., Investigating Causality in Parent-Toddler-Robot Interaction. In Companion of the 2024 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI '24) https://lnkd.in/dRmCDSgz Human robot interaction is often a very dynamic scenario, where both robots and humans perform verbal and non-verbal behaviors in response to each other. Here, we present a novel methodology of a multi-participants, multi-dimensional, time-series Granger-causality analysis of a parent-toddler-robot triadic interaction. Our results show a specific causal flow of behaviors, namely, that the parent mediates the toddler-robot interaction by both verbal and non-verbal behaviors. Our proposed novel analysis can highly enrich understanding of the complex dynamics of human robot interaction. ✍️🤓 Gvirsman, O. and Gordon, G., Effect of Social Robot's Role and Behavior on Parent-Toddler Interaction. In Proceedings of the 2024 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI '24). https://lnkd.in/dXswGjDK In this Honorable-mention HRI 2024 paper, we focused on how to involve parents in a triadic parent-toddler-robot interaction, where the goal is to promote better parent-toddler interaction by varying the robot's behaviors and roles. We thus developed two games, one with two levels of robot scaffolding, and another with either structured or unstructured design. We then explored, in two studies, how a social robot's assigned role and behaviors influence the engagement of parents and toddlers with the robot and their interaction with each other. Our results show that parents affectively scaffolded their children less when the robot increased its scaffolding behaviors and that parents provided more scaffolding in a structured game with the robot, whereas in an unstructured game the dyad exhibited more cooperation in which children exhibited more independence. These findings can contribute to a better understanding of interaction design, triadic dynamics, and the role of the robot in parent-toddler-robot scenario.
