Nintendo Will Not Be Using Generative AI for Its First Party Games - Nintendo Switch

With the growing use of AI in games, people have started wondering to what extent major game publishers will be using this technology in their upcoming projects. Nintendo recently addressed the topic during a recent Q&A session with its investors. During that time, the Nintendo president confirmed they would not take advantage of this technology for their first-party titles.

Spotted by Tweak Town, Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, was questioned about AI, among other things, during this session. Furukawa spoke about how “AI-like technology” has been a part of the gaming industry for a very long time, explaining how it has been “used to control enemy character movements.” This is why “game development and AI technology have always been closely related,” added Furukawa.

Furukawa expanded on generative AI, stating that it has become a “hot topic in recent years”, which can be “more creative” but also has “issues with intellectual property rights”. Furukawa explained that Nintendo has “decades of know-how in creating optimal gaming experiences” for their player base. They have remained “flexible in responding to technological developments” and hope to offer value to the players on something that is “unique” for them and “cannot be achieved through technology alone”.

The rise of AI in game development has raised concerns about its potential impact on the industry. With recent layoffs in mind, many fear that AI could lead to more job losses for developers. On the other hand, AI offers benefits such as streamlining processes in programming.
