Nestled on the foothills of the Himalayas, the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over various terrains that makes it the ideal home for a diversity of wildlife - from Indian elephants and the Royal Bengal tiger to endangered birds like the great Indian hornbill. The MoEF&CC (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) has released a draft policy that’s aimed at protecting the sanctuary’s ecology and biodiversity. It’s currently open for public consultation, which means that you get to voice your opinion on the draft and how it regulates/prohibits human activities within the area, amongst other considerations. There's currently barely any data on India's intertidal biodiversity. However, thanks to the Coastal Conservation Foundation's Intertidal Biodiversity of India (IBOI) project and over 450 citizen scientists, that's changing. Coastal Conservation Foundation collects data on the various species found in India’s intertidal zones and encourages citizens to contribute to their database on iNaturalist. This first-of-its-kind, open-access database can be used by students, educators, and researchers to learn more about the marine ecosystem. So far, they've documented over 1,400 species, and here's how you can help them in little ways: 👉 Volunteer to document and upload the data to iNaturalist 👉 Donate to the project (even a little goes a long way!)
