Our team at Aapti has been working on the project 'Codifying best practices for data workers’ wellbeing' and recently returned from their first round of fieldwork, based in the Nawada district of Bihar. The team met data workers to understand their experiences of data work, data annotation workflow and the potential effects of engaging with data work. The team is now back on their desks, reflecting and synthesising their learnings from the field, and preparing for the next field visit to meet more data workers and listen to their voices. Excellent conversation on the complexities of non-personal Data and data trusts during #privacynama2024, with Amol Kulkarni and Shweta moderated by Anwesha Sen. The distinction between personal and non-personal data is unclear especially when it comes to the use of data for AI. Even in the context of DPDP Act scraping is permitted but its impact on privacy is unknown. My view more participatory data stewardship/governance mechanisms to create accountability on data use instead splitting hairs on data type. Thank you MediaNama Nikhil Pahwa Shashidhar KJ for inviting me

Today I participated at a discussion organized by the AIR - Alliance for Innovative Regulation about GenAI and Financial Inclusion. One of my fellow panelists was Kunal Raj Barua from Aapti Institute. I loved their framework to mitigate bias across the AI value chain. Check out the mapping they have done to understand potential biases in the financial AI value chain. You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eDyduRWU We need more founders that are aware of these threats and willing to build algorithms that do not reproduce gender and racial biases. Thanks Shelley Anderson for the invite!

The recently released book titled ‘Technology and Analytics for Law and Justice’ delivers a comprehensive analysis of how technology revolutionises India’s legal and judicial system. The book offers valuable insights into the evolving role of technology in the Indian legal landscape. Aishani Rai and Ava Mumtaz Haidar from Aapti, who contributed to the book, explored the role of technology in justice and its connection with the values of sovereignty. The chapter focuses on the creation, funding and management of such technologies in ways that best align with the interests of the state, citizens, and those who can make the publicly-beneficial vision of digital-judicial infrastructure a reality.
