Rheinmetall has handed over 20 additional Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to the Ukrainian armed forces for their defence against the Russian aggressor. The delivery was completed at the end of the third quarter of 2024. This brings the total number of combat vehicles delivered directly to Ukraine or in the context of so-called ring exchanges (Ring- tausch) to around 200. A three-digit number of these systems are Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles. Airbus powered a 500 kW cryogenic propulsion system, marking a milestone in electric propulsion. Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, and Toshiba have entered into an exciting partnership to advance superconductivity research for hydrogen-powered aircraft. This collaboration will focus on co-developing a two-megawatt superconducting motor, utilizing cryogenic technology and liquid hydrogen to enhance energy efficiency in electric propulsion systems. Superconducting technologies are key to reducing emissions in aviation, and this project marks a major step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Thales Alenia Space, a Joint Venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has signed a contract with OHB to develop the two Earth observation Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instruments to be embarked on the two-satellite Harmony constellation – ESA’s 10th Earth Explorer mission expected to be launched aboard a Vega-C launch vehicle by 2029. Leonardo has unveiled BriteStorm, a new airborne electronic warfare technology designed to degrade enemy Integrated Air Defence Systems (IADS) and protect friendly forces. BriteStorm employs 'stand-in jamming,' using high-powered interference to suppress enemy radars and ensure mission success. Built with Leonardo’s proven Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) technology, it can be deployed on a wide range of UAVs, creating 'ghost' jet signatures to confuse adversaries. The UK Royal Air Force has already conducted successful trials, and potential customers include the U.S. Department of Defense and other global markets. Thales Alenia Space, in collaboration with ESA, has signed a €164 million contract amendment to extend and optimize the ESPRIT module for the Lunar Gateway—a key part of NASA's Artemis program for lunar exploration. Thales Alenia Space in France leads the project, with contributions from Italy, the UK, and OHB. The ESPRIT module is composed of two elements: Lunar Link, responsible for communications between the Gateway and the Moon, and Lunar View, which handles refueling and offers a 360° view of space and the Moon. This amendment increases Lunar View's size and capabilities, enabling more cargo storage, the integration of Canadarm3, and enhanced avionics for easier maintenance. The first element is set to launch in 2026, with Lunar View following in 2029.
