Alternative Materials - Transforming agriculture waste into high performing natural fibers and yarns.

About us

What? AltMat is an Alternative Materials company building Materials of Future. We transform agriculture waste into natural fibres and yarns - we call them ALT materials. Materials that balance performance and sustainability. Why? Textiles immensely damage the environment. For instance, polyester is plastic. Fashion wants to shift to better materials, but choosing between environment and economics has been an either-or choice. ‘No More!’ How? Using materials science and sustainable proprietary technologies, we transform this waste of plants like Hemp Seed Oil, Pineapple, Kenaf, Nettle, Banana, Industrial Hemp etc.into natural bast fibres and yarns.

🌍 Last week, we joined innovators, brands, investors, thinkers and many brilliant minds at the Global Change Awards Launch Summit in Mumbai. This event was about more than networking; it was about uniting to decarbonize fashion and redefine "consumption" in an age of sustainability. Key takeaways: 1. The need for standard sustainability metrics like energy, carbon, and water—a unified vision to turn data into action. 2. Exploring AI and digital solutions to streamline sustainable practices. 3. Redesigning the supply chain map collaboratively, breaking, remapping, and innovating for fresh perspectives on circularity. One exercise showed us how important it is to embrace both abundance and limitations: How can we leverage human potential and rethink what and how much we consume? Thank you, H&M Foundation, for sparking critical discussions. We’re inspired and ready to integrate these insights into our mission to make circularity real and sustainable fashion achievable! 🌱 H&M Foundation #globalchangeaward #decarbonisingfashion #fashioninnovation

Agricultural or farm waste is a significant aspect of the farming industry that demands careful consideration. It counts as biomass or secondary produce from plants that are primarily not grown for textiles or materials but are grown for other purposes like food, medicines, etc. Many farmers turn to agricultural burning to manage this waste, which they view as the most effective and cost-efficient method for clearing land, fertilising soil, and preparing it for new plantations. However, these blazes and the wildfires that spread from them are the world’s largest source of black carbon, a threat both to human and environmental health. Our leading innovator, AltMat addresses this issue by using a mixture of mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic processes to produce natural cellulose fibre and yarn from the agricultural waste of food and other crops (like hemp oil, hemp CBD, linseed, pineapple, etc.). This lady in India is turning waste from farms into fabric! Meet Shikha Shah the founder of AltMat who transform biomass of certain food, medicinal and industrial crops into natural fibres. Not only does this save waste from being burnt and releasing toxic emissions, but they also pay the farmers for the waste too. This process could help prevent bad practices, such as worker exploitation and the use of toxic chemicals, that are common in the fast fashion industry.

Goodness & kindness should be at the centre of building a sustainable fashion tech company. I love this mantra from Shikha Shah of AltMat and she is completely proving that this is possible with her biorefineries turning agricultural waste into #MaterialInnovations for #fashion. In the last episode of the Applied Series on my podcast, I discuss with Shikha: 🌱 If there's enough food in the world then there's also enough #waste in the world and something needs to be done with that. #opportunity 🧵 The complexities of developing sustainable materials and navigating the fashion supply chain. 🕰️ Patience and Perseverance are required in driving material innovations within the fashion industry. 🎧 Listen to the Applied Series finale here: beyondform.io/podcast 📚 Get your copy of Fashion Tech Applied now! 🔗 www.beyondform.io/book #FashionTech

AltMat’s ALTAG is an upscale natural cellulose fiber born from the remnants of agriculture's bounty. Crafted from the stems and leaves left behind after the harvest of food, medicinal, and non-textile crops, AltMat’s innovative process upcycles this biomass into the ALTAG fiber, using proprietary technologies. Partnering with value chain collaborators, ALTAG fibers are spun into blended yarns, ready to be transformed into new fabrics.
