Today we are remembering Ratan Tata: industrialist, philanthropist, leader and visionary. When we talk about leadership, we tend to deal in absolutes, but leadership, like life, is immensely more complicated. What we will remember him for is that he embodied the ideals that matter the most for our future — he looked at the big picture, he was hungry for innovation that improved the realities of life that he observed every day, and he was committed to staying here and building a new India with humanity and humility. We were lucky to have known him. Image courtesy of GQ India.

Every year, millions of people silently struggle with mental illness and ill-health. Stigma, lack of knowledge, and a lack of access to quality care prevent them from seeking help. In our series of conversations exploring mental health, we have welcomed experts on caste-based stigma, creativity, gender, work cultures and more. Join us on #WorldMentalHealthDay as we engage with the intersecting themes that cause mental distress in society. With every discussion, we learn more about ways to advocate for mental health to be a subject we treat with the gravity, thoughtfulness and compassion it deserves. In this week’s #spotlight, we explore 5 initiatives from across South Asia that promote visual cultures from the region. Some fund documentary features, others platform incisive photography, while still more preserve popular ephemera. Projects like Docskool, Drik Picture Library Limited, Khajistan (khajistan.com), Documentary Resource Initiative, and Kaiya Collective widen the possibilities for local voices to reach global audiences, and for global stories to resonate in local contexts! --- Slide 1 — Photos from docsckool.org Slide 2 — Phtotos from drik.net Slide 3 — Photos from khajistan.com Slide 4 — Photos from docresi.org Slide 5 — Photos from kaiyacollective.com #SpotlightOnSouthAsia #film #visualculture
