About us

Ather Energy was started in 2013 by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, two engineering graduates straight out of college with the audacity to dream and challenge the well-established Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and replace it with an electric drive. We built India’s first smart and connected electric scooters, the Ather 450 product line, because we believe that's where the future of personal mobility is headed. Ather is one of the few companies in India, specifically within the automotive industry, to have products and services that amalgamate clean design and engineering - Hardware and software. Today, our product offerings include the Ather Rizta, Ather 450X, Ather 450S, Public and Private charging Infrastructure, Accessories and Merch, and innovative ownership plans. We are also building a complete ecosystem for India’s electric vehicles - powered by indigenous design and all locally manufactured.

Asking team members to fill out an employee satisfaction survey form may yield an engagement score, but can it truly uncover the intricacies of an organisation's culture? At Ather, we have adopted a more intimate and dynamic approach to understanding our organisational culture. Since 2017, our 'Culture Conversations' have provided a platform for genuine dialogue. Team members across the organisation answer questions around how they are experiencing Ather, the collective leadership, and our values. These open conversations occur every 18-20 months and engage 20% of the organisation in sessions that last between 60-90 minutes. Through a blend of one-on-one conversations, focus group discussions with small and large groups, Culture Conversations ensures that a diverse set of voices, regardless of role or tenure, are heard. This approach leads to candid exchanges, highlighting our strengths and areas ripe for growth. This method delves deeper, revealing unconscious beliefs, assumptions, and team dynamics. Now in its 4th cycle, each iteration of Culture Conversations has allowed us to progressively refine our cultural identity. Our culture collective, 'Think As A Species,' emerged directly from the initial conversations. Feedback from the latest round, Culture Conversations 4.0, provided insightful reflections, praising leadership accessibility, decision clarity, the spirit of innovation, and customer focus. Our moonshots lie in prioritising meaningful recognition, demonstrating TAASTM  in our swimlanes, and offering space for new joiners to assimilate well, among others. These insights highlight crucial areas for improvement, especially in enhancing leadership alignment and adhering to our core values as we continue to evolve. So here's to crafting a collaborative and inclusive workplace where each of us can confidently say, "I’m part of the story!” Here are photos of the Culture Conversations 4.0 cascade event with some of our leaders. #ThinkAsASpecies #AtherEnergy #CultureConversations #Culture #OrganisationalDevelopment

Imagine stepping out of your front door into a city designed with accessible infrastructure and public transportation built to be more people-friendly. That's the reality Pravar Chaudhary from bengawalk wishes all cities had. In our latest session of The Boring Conference, he sparked a fascinating conversation on transforming urban environments into spaces that genuinely understand and cater to the needs of their inhabitants. He talked about building cities that really 'get' us - ones that adapt to our needs and rhythms instead of the other way around. Our cities deserve roads, parks, and buildings designed not just for efficiency but to make our daily lives smoother and more enjoyable. Bengawalk’s mission, as the name suggests, is to make Bengaluru more walkable. This initiative focuses on understanding how people move within their cities - where they go, what they do, and how they feel about it.  With these insights, bengawalk proposes changes to the city’s infrastructure by working with relevant government bodies. Their work reminds us that innovation isn't just about the technology we create but about understanding the people who will use it. Similarly, at Ather, we believe our products are more than modes of transport; they contribute to reimagining mobility by creating a more connected, enjoyable, and efficient experience. At Ather, learning is continuous and the ironically-titled "The Boring Conference" is our platform for enthusiasts/experts from any field to take us through their area of interest and personal journey. #TheBoringConference #AtherEnergy #Bengaluru #Bengawalk

Meet Varsha Madhukar, a real go-getter at Ather Energy. She started fresh out of college in January 2023 as an intern. Her hard work and talent shone through, extending what was meant to be a six-month internship into eight months, eventually landing her a full-time position in the Engineering team. Varsha's journey into engineering was sparked by her fascination with physics, even though she initially leaned towards biology. Coming into Ather, surrounded by peers from prestigious institutes like IITs, was a bit daunting at first. But, she quickly realised Ather was all about grounding oneself in the basics and thinking from first principles - something tutoring her sister in 11th grade had already prepared her for. At Ather, Varsha hit the ground running. From day one, she tackled everything from selecting the right fuses for battery packs to developing algorithms that predict battery problems before they happen. Her ability to innovate comes from balancing assigned duties with the freedom to explore her ideas. This shows that giving someone trust and responsibility can really spark creativity and lead to extraordinary innovations. Discover more about the problems she is solving, among other fascinating stories below ⬇️ Here’s to celebrating Varsha, and every original story like hers. #BeTheStory #PeopleOfAther #InnovatorSpotlight #IntellectualProperty #WomenAtAther

We just wrapped up another enlightening Auto For All session! This time, we dived into the heart of automotive power transmission systems. Guided by our in-house expert, Mohammed Athif, this session significantly boosted our team's knowledge, blending theoretical insights with hands-on demonstrations. The session started with an overview of power and its transmission in vehicles. We then explored how Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) handle power transmission and compared it with the slick mechanisms in Electric Vehicles (EVs). It was fascinating to see the innovations and differences between these two approaches. A key part of our discussion focused on choosing the right components for power transmission. Athif tackled the big question: "Why a belt, not a chain?" He provided clear, in-depth explanations about the efficiency, durability, and specific uses that guide these choices. We also touched upon the concept of power transmission ratio. It's a bit like finding the right balance between speed and strength, ensuring our scooters can zip through city streets and climb up hills without breaking a sweat. Auto For All sessions are one of the ways we keep everyone at Ather in the know and foster a shared passion for different aspects of the automotive world.  Stay tuned for what we are exploring next in Auto For All. Here, we are all about growing our knowledge together, one session at a time. #AtherEnergy #AutoForAll #TeamDevelopment

Meet Vishnu Chaithanya, one of the key members of our sales strategy team! From fine-tuning our network strategy to mastering channel management, his journey at Ather over the last three years has been one of growth and adaptability. When he is off-duty, he swaps strategy for storytelling, drawing away into the night to settle his little one's demand for nightly doodles – a newfound joy and challenge. He is not much for small talk, but if you bring up cricket, especially those classic 2000s matches, he will chat away for hours. His philosophy in life is as straightforward as his love for the game: give it everything you've got, be cool with the outcome, and look forward to a new day. Discover more about Vishnu and his adventures at Ather in this month's highlight of #KnowOurCrew. What does the science of cooking and the art of engineering have in common? More than you might think. In our latest session of The Boring Conference, Ashok Krish, writer of Masala Lab, came over and spilled the beans on his journey of becoming a content creator in the food and nutrition space. From describing the correct way of caramelising onions to debunking myths about Indian food and our genetic makeup, he emphasised the importance of questioning and understanding the 'why' and 'how' behind conventional wisdom. His deep dive into Indian cuisine was particularly intriguing to listen to. He shared insights into diverse cooking styles and their history, the role of ‘tadka’ in bringing unique tastes to dishes from different regions, the genetic adaptation for fat storage in Indians due to a history of adapting to famines for many millennia, common apprehensions about eating food stored overnight in the refrigerator, and a lot more. Ashok's passion for food and his ability to connect it with culture, history, and scientific research made the conversation impossible to ignore. By the end of the session, we were left with a newfound appreciation for the food on our plates and a healthy scepticism towards food and nutrition-related claims commonly seen online. At Ather, learning is continuous and the ironically-titled TBC is our platform for enthusiasts/experts from any field to take us through their area of interest and personal journey. #TheBoringConference #AtherEnergy #MasalaLab #Food

Last Friday, we opened the doors of our vehicle factory for a plant tour and a lively interaction for the members of the NHRD HOSUR CHAPTER  Their goal? To get a firsthand look at the operational dynamics of a young organisation like ours and witness the magic of engineering through the journey our electric scooters undergo from the initial design to the final product. They also joined a talk on employer branding by our very own Rohith Hariharan, sparking some pertinent questions and some insightful conversations. Thanks to the NHRD Hosur team for swinging by and taking a peek into our world. It was great sharing our story and learning together. #TAAS #WorkCulture #Innovation #Collaboration

Our engineers needed a heightened sense of adventure, so they "tested" the Ather scooters atop Khardungla Pass in Leh - strictly for work, we swear! 😌

Co-founder & CEO at Ather Energy

When we started Ather Energy, we built with the philosophy - Build for us! The idea was to build something we ourselves will use. So, we made efforts to build an electric scooter that offered a great riding experience to the rider.  For years, we have been pushing our scooters to the limits, testing them on different terrains and under varying conditions. Our first family scooter, Rizta, is no exception to this. Recently, our team took the Rizta and the 450X on an epic adventure across Leh, reaching altitudes up to 18,000 ft and conquering the treacherous Khardungla Pass. The 450X has been on dirt tracks where customers have tested it out and had some fun. But riding through rugged terrains, steep climbs, and sharp turns to reach the peak just reiterated the capabilities of our scooters, ensuring our customers can take them anywhere they want confidently. Here are some pictures from the adventure, with more coming from different locations soon.
