Fun Facts About the U.S. Petroleum Industry: The First Modern Auto Show, NYC 🚗 In 1900, the first major automobile show in the United States opened at Madison Square Garden in New York City. While not the first auto show in the country, it's considered the first modern automotive show. Here are some fascinating details: - The weeklong event, sponsored by the Automobile Club of America, featured 66 exhibitors displaying 31 innovative autos and various accessories. - Called a "horseless show," it presented 160 different vehicles. - New Yorkers welcomed electric models as a solution to the city's horse-related waste problem. - The show featured braking and acceleration demonstrations, with a special 200-foot wooden ramp to test hill-climbing abilities. - About 48,000 visitors paid 50¢ each to attend. - The most popular models were electric, steam, and gasoline-powered, in that order. Early Challenges: - Electric vehicles: Limited by heavy batteries and lack of infrastructure. - Steam-powered: Slow to start and required frequent water stops. - Gasoline-powered: Initially described as "noxious, noisy, unreliable, and elephantine." The Rise of Gasoline: - Gasoline cost only about 15 cents a gallon in 1900. - It produced dramatic increases in engine horsepower. - The consumer market was ready, as electric lights were making kerosene obsolete. Star of the Show: Ransom Eli Olds' prototype "runabout," later known as the Curved Dash Oldsmobile, became the world's first mass-produced car. Built between 1901 and 1907, it sold for $650 (equivalent to $16,900 today).
