    How to excel as a CTO: a tale of two paths When I first stepped into the role of CTO, I thought I had it all figured out. Technology was my playground, and I knew my way around it. But soon, I realized that being a CTO is about much more than just technical expertise. Consider two different CTOs. CTO Bob: Bob believes the CTO role is all about the tech. He buries himself in code, confident that his technical skills will ensure the company’s long-term success. His deep understanding of the product has served him well so far—no one knows the technology like he does. But as Bob’s team grows, so do the demands on his leadership and strategic planning. Rather than anticipating these new challenges, Bob tackles them as they arise, relying on his technical prowess to pull him through. This reactive approach keeps him constantly in fire-fighting mode. He’s always solving yesterday’s problems, leaving little time to plan for tomorrow. As expectations grow, Bob finds it increasingly difficult to prioritize effectively. He pushes through each challenge, but the pressure builds as he struggles to adapt to his evolving role. CTO Alice: Alice takes a different approach. She knows that being a CTO requires more than just technical expertise. Recognizing the different facets of the role, Alice builds a well-rounded team that complements her skills. As her responsibilities expand, Alice doesn’t wait for challenges to come to her. She anticipates them. She regularly seeks feedback and conducts self-assessments, identifying areas where she needs to grow, and develops the skills necessary to lead her team and company forward.
