The third annual progress report, “Progress Towards Shipping’s 2030 Breakthrough,” issued by the UCL Energy Institute, UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, and the Getting to Zero Coalition (a Global Maritime Forum initiative), shows that the global shipping industry is not on track to meet its goal of using zero-emission fuels for 5% of its fuel by 2030. This puts the target of net-zero emissions by 2050 in jeopardy. The next 12 months are crucial for making progress, and experts warn that adopting alternative fuels too slowly could cause serious setbacks. Meeting this target is important for creating the infrastructure and supply chains needed for cleaner shipping. The report emphasises the need for the industry to act quickly. To speed up this transition, fossil fuel use must be reduced through efficiency gains. Since alternative fuel technology is developing slowly, achieving significant reductions today will rely on voyage optimisation. Today #OFAC sanctioned the Cathay Phoenix (IMO 9249324), the vessel that jump-started DBI. Two years ago, Charles Ike and I had the privilege to work with Christiaan Triebert and the The New York Times on a curious case of a vessel appearing in the Pacific while it was visiting Kozmino, just as we were starting our own analysis of the Dark Fleet. Christiaan was able to take this case and develop it into one of the most important series of articles written on maritime sanctions evasion. Two years later at DBI, we have over a thousand tankers, most of them on our watchlist at least a year before OFAC designates them, that are dealing with Iran, Venezuela, and (likely) outside price cap Russian crude. The majority of them are engaged in spoofing, and the teams at Pole Star Global, Blackstone Compliance Services and #deepblueintelligence have been at the forefront of countering spoofing, including realistic tracks that can't be differentiated from normal AIS. This has helped our clients prevent millions of dollars of high risk or suspicious transactions, and keep their institutions safe from threat actors such as Iran's IRGC. A damaged ship, Ruby, carrying 20,000 tonnes of explosive ammonium nitrate, is stuck off the coast of Kent, according to Pole Star Global's tracking technology. Pole Star Global's upgraded Emissions Module can dramatically enhance your cost and emissions savings. In a standout example, Podium helped one client save nearly $60,000 on operational costs for an Aframax tanker. The optimised route cut emissions by 494 metric tons, which translated into 247 metric tons of CO2 in terms of EU ETS savings.
