The effect of EPR on the informal sector: India’s waste management sector relies heavily on the informal workforce, with an estimated 1.5 to 4 million waste pickers playing an essential role in the collection and sorting of plastic waste. Despite their invaluable contributions, these workers often face challenges such as a lack of recognition, job security, and fair wages. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is addressing these issues by transforming not only the approach to waste management but also improving the livelihoods of these workers. By holding producers accountable for the entire life cycle of their plastic products, #EPR is creating structured opportunities for waste pickers to participate in formal, safe, and dignified employment. EPR initiatives have already made significant progress in formalizing this sector, leading to:   · Upward financial mobility for waste #aggregators and #recyclers due through reliable income streams and investment in collection infrastructure.  · Training and skill development programs tailored for waste pickers to achieve better segregation, enhance value and streamline feedstock supply chains. · Better working conditions as they become an integral part of mainstream product supply chains, enabling a better quality of life for the waste workers.   As more organizations adopt EPR, we are witnessing a ripple effect-enhanced social impact, job creation, and the empowerment of an informal workforce that is crucial to India’s mission towards sustainable plastic waste management.   #EPR #BanyanNation #PlasticWasteManagement #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #WasteManagement #InformalSector #RecyclingJobs

Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) is critical for driving India’s recycling industry and preventing landfill overload. If the present trend continues, recycling rate stands at just 11% in 2035, while a staggering 29% of plastic waste ending up in landfills. But with the implementation of EPR and a clear commitment to sustainable change, the future tells a different story. With EPR in effect, by 2035, recycling rates are projected to soar to 67%, reducing landfill waste to just 3%, according to the National Circular Economy Roadmap for Reducing Plastic Waste in India by CSIRO (December 2023).   This transformation is driven by the Government of India’s roadmap, which addresses the entire value chain of plastics. EPR plays a critical role in holding producers accountable and ensuring that waste is managed effectively from its source through its lifecycle.
