We are kicking off the National Nutrition Week by celebrating our partner, Basic Healthcare Services (BHS). Working in remote, tribal districts of Southern Rajasthan that witness a huge burden of malnutrition and preventable deaths, BHS has set up community-owned and community-led Phulwaris. Phulwaris are creches and day-care centers that transform children with severe and acute malnutrition into thriving and confident individuals. They are also hubs of training where grassroots women emerge as nutrition champions and leaders. Further, every Phulwari engages communities to build awareness and action on nutrition, food security, and well-being. At Start Up! we are honoured to serve as the strategy partners of BHS and watch their daily wins of building the nutrition capital of marginalized communities. "Today we visited Magara phala (which literally means hamlet on the hills) in Bedawal. We spoke with those community members who are drinking eater from open wells. We discussed the need for putting bleaching powder in the wells. There were one or two elderly people who spoke about earlier days when guinea worms would come out of the limbs. Government then had promoted drinking water after sieving and chlorinating wells. It led to eradication of the disease. Now since many people are having vomiting and diarrhea, it makes sense to put bleaching powder in the wells; they agreed. We then demonstrated how to make the bleaching powder solution and how to chlorinate the wells. Three of the community members took responsibility to chlorinate 8 wells, which we really liked." "Today evening, a prayer evening (Bhajan Sandhya) was organized ijn Maa Badi Kendra in Daikhera. There were men from some surrounding villages as well. I spoke about diarrhea. People listened intently, and shared that there is (outbreak of) diarrhea almost everywhere. I told them to see care when someone has diarrhea. They asked what should they do at home. I shared that they should drink more fluids and continued feeding. Another person remarked that we should not waste time going to Bhopas (traditional healers). Today is Vishwa Adivasi Diwas, a day to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and resilience of our tribal communities. At BHS, we’re proud and privileged to work with these incredible communities. Often, we’re told our work is challenging, but the inspiration we draw from these communities is beyond any difficulty. The trust, warmth, and love we’ve received from these communities far surpass anything we’ve been able to offer. We’re humbled by their resilience and grateful for the opportunity to serve them.
