For conservation of India's rich freshwater ecosystems!

About us

We are dedicated to the comprehensive conservation, research, and education surrounding India's freshwater turtles and tortoises, which face severe threats including exploitation in illegal trades and habitat degradation. Through innovative conservation strategies, inclusive training programs, and capacity-building efforts, we engage stakeholders ranging from local communities to researchers to combat the imminent extinction risks these species confront. Our research endeavors aim to fill critical knowledge gaps, informing evidence-based conservation actions and securing funding for vital projects. Education lies at the core of our mission as we conduct outreach activities across diverse groups, fostering awareness, and cultivating a network of advocates for the protection of freshwater chelonians and their ecosystems. Together, we strive to empower individuals and communities to become guardians of India's freshwater biodiversity, ensuring a sustainable future for these invaluable species and their habitats.

Senior Scientist at Nature Conservation Foundation

Some years ago my colleagues at the Nature Conservation Foundation were discussing how we would like to tell more reflective, honest stories about our work -- not just the shiny, polished narratives that are usually required in standard research, education and conservation publications. So we decided to write a book, collating our individual and shared adventures and learnings over the 25 years (now 28 hrs) of NCF's existence. The 16 chapters talk about successes and failures; of elation and despair. Of love of landscapes and wildlife; of deep affection and respect for embedded communities. Of what has been learned and what has been unlearned. And all this with humour and humility (we hope!). AT THE FEET OF LIVING THINGS has been out a few months shy of 2 years now. If you have read it, would you mind sharing your thoughts below? https://lnkd.in/dfTxXeUN CONTENTS Foreword by Mahesh Rangarajan Introduction: What every starfish knows - Aparajita Datta, Rohan Arthur, TR Shankar Raman PART 1: PEOPLE AND PARKS 1. Drawing lines in the water - Rucha Karkarey, Mayuresh Gangal 2. Contested terrain - Aparajita Datta PART II: AMONG WILD SPECIES 3. A snow leopard dies again - Charudutt Mishra 4. The trails and trials of dugong research - Elrika D'souza 5. Hornbills of hope and resilience - Aparajita Datta 6. The day of the macaque - Anindya 'Rana' Sinha PART III: LIVING WITH WILDLIFE 7. Conservation is an elephantine journey - M. Ananda Kumar, Ganesh Raghunathan, Vinod Krishnan, Sreedhar Vijayakrishnan 8. Snow leopard in the stockade - Kulbhushansingh Suryawanshi, Ajay Bijoor 9. Trouble on the green - Teresa Alcoverro, Rohan Arthur 10. Inclusive conservation with Project Snow Leopard - Yash Veer Bhatnagar PART IV: THE FALL AND REVIVAL OF NATURE 11. A rainforest restoration story - TR Shankar Raman, Divya Mudappa 12. Searching for resilience in a dying reef - Rohan Arthur PART V: BRINGING PEOPLE AND NATURE TOGETHER 13. Introducing the Freshwater working group! Canopy Collective's Freshwater working group aims to develop and strengthen collaborations between local communities, researchers, designers, filmmakers, and science communicators to increase research and awareness on the fate of freshwater habitats, their threatened aquatic biodiversity, and the need for their conservation at site-specific scales. This group also aims to improve awareness on flood disaster management and build informed and prepared communities across different socio-economic strata, which is an urgent need of the hour. Our goal is to bring together people across various disciplines to build a flood toolkit repository and help co-develop meaningful ways of conservation of freshwater habitats. Group members: Anuja Mital, Pratiti Majumder, Tahaj Hussain, Jitendra Deka, Parixit Kafley, and Jyotsna Nag.

  • Hello LinkedIn, from the Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises Foundation! This Foundation was set up in 2019 with the a strong motivation and intention of conserving India's freshwater chelonians and their habitats through dedicated research, outreach and education. Our country’s freshwater ecosystems are under relentless attacks like never known before; there has never been a more crucial time for us to start working towards freshwater conservation in India. India also currently harbours a rich chelonian diversity, with 37 species and subspecies of freshwater turtles and tortoises found across the country. With freshwater turtle and tortoise populations under severe pressures of extinction due to a myriad of anthropogenic threats, crucial yet easily accessible information on their ecology and habitat interactions are lacking even today. Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises of India (FTTI) is our flagship Citizen Science project with the India Biodiversity Portal that was initiated in 2018, that serves as a repository of turtle observations, and is a platform for information and resources on India's Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises. Check the project out at https://lnkd.in/ewDBGZdR Stay tuned for more updates on what we've accomplished so far, and our active projects!
