About us

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world. The ICMR is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. ICMR’s 26 National Institutes address themselves to research on specific health topics like tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera and diarrhoeal diseases, viral diseases including AIDS, malaria, kala-azar, vector control, nutrition, food & drug toxicology, reproduction, immuno-haematology, oncology, medical statistics, etc. Its 6 Regional Medical Research Centres address themselves to regional health problems, and also aim to strengthen or generate research capabilities in different geographic areas of the country The Council's research priorities coincide with National health priorities such as control and management of communicable diseases, fertility control, maternal and child health, control of nutritional disorders, developing alternative strategies for health care delivery, containment within safety limits of environmental and occupational health problems; research on major non-communicable diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, blindness, diabetes and other metabolic and haematological disorders; mental health research and drug research (including traditional remedies). These efforts are undertaken with a view to reduce the total burden of disease and to promote health and well-being of the population. At Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), I saw how India’s homegrown innovations are saving lives. Fetal monitoring systems are helping mothers and newborns, real-time TB detection is catching cases sooner, and streamlined delivery systems are bringing medicine to remote communities faster. These breakthroughs aren’t just changing health outcomes in India—they have the power to change the world.

  • Hon'ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Sh. J. P. Nadda ji also launched the first in the world Open system RT-PCR kit for Tuberculosis validated by ICMR during the International Symposium on Health Technology Assessment (ISHTA) today. The Quantiplus kit developed by Huwell Lifesciences , which can be used on any PCR machine. This will bring down the cost of TB testing to 1/5th.

  • Hon'ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare Shri J P Nadda ji launched ICMR's flagship initiative, Medical Innovations Patent Mitra ,during the International Symposium on Health Technology Assessment (ISHTA) today. Together with NITI Aayog, Department of Pharmaceuticals & Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, we’re building a stronger health innovation ecosystem. In today’s fast-evolving biomedical landscape, securing intellectual property (IP) is essential to translating research into real-world impact. With this vision, ICMR has launched this initiative to support researchers, startups, and institutions in patenting and technology transfer. Why it matters? Too many innovations remain in labs, unable to reach patients. Patent Mitra bridges this gap by providing end-to-end support—accelerating patents, fostering industry collaborations, and ensuring faster commercialization. India is at a pivotal moment in its innovation journey. Our ability to translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world solutions will define the future of healthcare for millions. Patent Mitra aligns with India’s broader vision of self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) by fostering a robust ecosystem where scientists and entrepreneurs can innovate with confidence, knowing their intellectual property is protected. This initiative is not just about patents—it is about creating a culture of innovation, encouraging collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers, and ultimately driving economic and societal growth. As we move forward, ICMR remains committed to supporting the next generation of healthcare pioneers. We invite researchers, startups, and industry leaders to leverage Patent Mitra and be part of India’s transformation into a global innovation powerhouse. Let us work together to ensure that every breakthrough reaches those who need it most.

  • ICMR, with support from CDSCO, has developed a guidance document for innovators and testing laboratories on validating diagnostics for pathogen identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. It provides a comprehensive framework to evaluate test performance, ensuring reliability for clinical decision-making. The document also outlines evaluation criteria, regulatory pathways, and required evidence for validation while incorporating advancements in emerging technologies.
