🌆 As we explore the concept of 15 Minute Neighborhoods of Bengaluru, we have been studying examples of successful projects from around the world. These urban design interventions epitomize the partnerships forged between local communities and government entities to create vibrant people centered places that encourage sustainable mobility through pedestrian and cycling networks. The featured projects are: Featured Case Studies: 🏰 Porte de Montmartre, Paris Schools are envisioned as the foci of the 'quarter-hour city', along with pedestrian-first initiatives to enable people to live, work and move within proximity to meet their needs. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦.𝗔.𝗙.𝗘. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 We are excited to share the highlights from a pivotal national workshop on "Site Adjacent Factory Employee (S.A.F.E.) Accommodation," hosted by NITI Aayog and Jana Group as the knowledge partner. This workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including central and state government representatives, manufacturers, investors, developers, and financial institutions, to tackle the critical issue of worker housing near industrial sites.   𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 1. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀: Identified and evaluated operational constraints and scalability challenges, highlighting opportunities for enhancing existing government and bilateral models.  2. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: Key discussion included land use, zoning laws, building codes, and fiscal incentives, analyzed across contexts and scales, such as brownfield versus greenfield developments and large-scale manufacturing versus MSMEs. 3. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰-𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: Defined the roles and responsibilities of central and state governments, manufacturers, developers, and financiers to accelerate the adoption of SAFE accommodation. The workshop recognized the potential of a “Market Based Model: A Combination of Scale, Speed & Skill” as the scale of the demand exceeds the capabilities of current government-led and bilateral models. 💡JUSP’s vision aligns closely with the goals of this workshop: 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀: We are committed to addressing the housing needs of industrial workers who are largely migrants; a crucial yet often overlooked segment of urban populations. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: We advocate for regulatory reforms and social infrastructure to ensure SAFE accommodations are secure, functional, and sustainable. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: We emphasize the importance of strategic location, thoughtful design, essential services, and high-quality pedestrian infrastructure. 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Our vision includes integrating eco-friendly practices into worker housing projects and creating living spaces that support long-term well-being. Addressing worker housing in industrial areas is vital for enhancing productivity and supporting economic growth. By aligning efforts and leveraging the expertise of all stakeholders, we can create vibrant, equitable, and sustainable urban spaces. Thank you to NITI Aayog and all participants for their valuable contributions. Together, we can drive meaningful change and build better futures for industrial workers across India. 🌍 Written and Co-Curated by Pravalika Sarvadevabhatla NITI Aayog | Nithya Ramesh | Krishnan S.

A site of livelihood, leisure, and religion, the Mudichur Lake is cherished as a part of the lives of the local community. We observed a range of activities taking place around the lake along its edges and shaded crevices, echoing the many roles it plays. Changing patterns of economic activity and the construction of new infrastructure have weakened the connection between the people and the water. Through our project to revitalize the lake in collaboration with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, we aim to make the lake an ecologically resilient and thriving public space where people can once again reconnect with nature. Stay tuned to learn more about this ongoing project and our adventures on site!
