🌍🏠 This World Habitat Day, we wanted to share the story of Muniyamma’s house that greatly contributed to our understanding of creating access to affordable housing in India.  People from low-income segments lack access to design, construction, and financial pathways to build their houses in an affordable manner. Follow our journey to see how we tackle this challenge and empower communities to design their futures. Currently, transport systems contribute to almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, much of which are derived from cities. As things stand, the number of cars on the road are expected to double by 2030. So what kind of mobility systems do cities need for a low carbon urban future? Join us for our upcoming dialogue, where we try to answer that question. Experts will discuss current trends and challenges in low carbon mobility, and concepts like 15-minute cities, electric mobility, and more on the future of public transport. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dhEejcTr Joining us are Anna Walter-Dockx, PhD, behavioural economist and expert on sustainable habits at Austria's ÖBB, Karthikeyan Kuppu, strategy consultant with many years of experience in the mobility industry, and Surjyatapa Ray, researcher and urban designer at Jana Urban Space. Can you spot the missing elements of design and planning along Commercial Street? Here’s a couple that we’ve identified; 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 means raising the “grade” or “level” of the footpath above the vehicular path to separate it from pedestrian traffic. 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 are designated points along the street where vehicles can stop briefly to drop off or pick up passengers without obstructing traffic flow. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 are physical features, such as speed bumps designed to reduce vehicle speed in specific areas to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 are essential public amenities and infrastructure that manage waste disposal and prevent water logging in public areas keeping it healthy and safe. These little things make a big difference to the quality of our urban environment. What would you add to make this space safer and more enjoyable for everyone? #janaurbanspace #jusp #janaurbanspacefoundation

Can you spot the missing elements of design and planning at the entrance to Cubbon Park? Here’s a couple that we’ve identified; 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 refers to the design of spaces and systems that are fully accessible to individuals of all abilities. Here, it would include the installation of ramps, tactile guidance systems, and wide pathways that accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀 are zones for vehicles to safely drop off visitors and with convenient access to public transportation. They are designed to reduce conflict between pedestrians and vehicles at entrances and reduce congestion. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 include well-marked crosswalks, pedestrian signals, traffic calming measures like speed bumps, and clear signage to guide drivers. 𝗗𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 are designated areas for vendors to operate, strategically located alongside seating, in shaded, and well lit areas to create vibrant places. These little things make a big difference to the quality of our urban environment. What would you add to make this space safer and come alive for everyone to enjoy? #janaurbanspace #jusp #janaurbanspacefoundation
