  • Transforming Ahmedabad’s Kharicut Canal: From Waste Dump to Mobility Corridor Ahmedabad’s British-era Kharicut Canal, once an essential irrigation channel but later reduced to a waste dump, is on its way to a remarkable transformation. By 2027, this neglected waterway will be redeveloped into a six-lane mobility corridor, linking the northern and southern parts of the city while also improving drainage with a new stormwater pipeline. The ₹1,003 crore second phase of the Kharicut Canal Redevelopment Project, funded by the Gujarat government, will cover 28 km of the 80-km-long canal within Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) jurisdiction. Why is this transformation crucial? ✅ Flood Mitigation – The redesigned canal will boost its water-carrying capacity by 42%, ensuring faster drainage from low-lying flood-prone areas. ✅ Improved Mobility – A new six-lane road will ease congestion and create a vital transit corridor across north, east, and south Ahmedabad. ✅ Public Health & Environment – The cleanup effort will eliminate waste accumulation, mosquito infestations, and industrial effluent hazards. ✅ Urban Development – Stormwater drains on both sides of the corridor will streamline rainwater flow, reducing waterlogging issues. With over ₹700 crore already spent, Ahmedabad is set to witness a major infrastructure upgrade, blending mobility with sustainability. A city’s progress is reflected in how it reclaims and repurposes its forgotten spaces—Kharicut Canal is a prime example. What are your thoughts on this redevelopment? 🚀 #Ahmedabad #UrbanTransformation #InfrastructureDevelopment #Sustainability
