Alternative & Independent Journalism by an all-women team of reporters from the Indian hinterland.

About us

What makes Khabar Lahariya unique is not just our journalists – women from Dalit, tribal, Muslim and backward castes – but also our groundbreaking rural journalism. This is what Rural Journalism Looks Like Khabar Lahariya is known for its ‘real’ journalism from rural India. It is a testament to the fact that in a democracy, a powerful and independent fourth estate is essential as any other service, in every single village or town. Our rural journalism follows the everyday stories of everyday people in areas that are completely out of the spotlight of media attention. We have been called a powerful local watchdog, an instrument for enforcing robust grassroots governance and accountability. We expose the acts of omission and commission by the local bureaucracy/political class. Our news – in video, text and audio formats – brings to light the growing distance between the promises made by the government in terms of rural development and empowerment, and the actual delivery on the ground. We also document an India in the 21st Century that you don’t otherwise see. It’s smart, changing, churning, speaking out: you don’t want to miss it. Our rural journalism is feminist. We report on issues of violence against women with an astute understanding of gender and caste structures within which this violence is situated. News reports in Khabar Lahariya question structures of power and inequity in the personal sphere of the family, as well as in the public realm. We are now the country’s only women-run brand of ethical and independent rural news. Khabar Lahariya reaches five million people a month through multiple digital platforms. We have a network of 30 women reporters and stringers in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It’s your news, in your voice

No work under MGNREGA? Residents of Chaukipurwa in Banda, UP have alleged that they were made to do daily wage work under MGNREGA but have not been paid for it, while others say they received no work at all. They have submitted a memorandum to the BDO (Block Development Officer) demanding payment of 400 rupees for the daily wage work. The BDO has ordered an investigation. The secretary says that government work is carried out under MGNREGA, but the workers' demand is that if they were employed on a daily wage basis, they should be paid accordingly. The flour prepared through the sustainable #chakki is healthier than machine ground flour. Which method do you use for rotis? Harijanpur, Chitrakoot, UP📍

Responsibilities, Low Pay, and Limited Facilities: Work Lives of ASHA Workers Are Full Of Woes The work lives of ASHA workers are full of challenges. They provide care for pregnant women, ensure vaccinations, and facilitate other healthcare services. Additionally, they distribute "Shagun Kits" or family planning materials to newly married couples. Their presence in the hinterland is extremely crucial. However, ASHA workers complain that they do not receive adequate facilities or salaries from the State. The incentive payments of ASHA workers are determined by higher authorities, but they do not receive sufficient facilities to carry out their work smoothly. We listen to their woes in this ground report. Watch now: https://lnkd.in/gbqShaUY

Rural #MeToo: Why don't stories of sexual harassment of women in villages come to light? In 2018, the #MeToo movement in India provided women with a platform to come forward and share their experiences of sexual violence. It was a way for women to express that they, too, had faced sexual violence but had not been able to demand justice until now. However, the #MeToo movement has largely remained confined to cities. What about the thousands of towns and villages where such incidents are a part of everyday life? Where are the voices and stories from those places? Watch now: https://lnkd.in/gEwp5FJU

Replug | Block Development Officers: Catalysts of Rural Governance. A cornerstone of India’s grassroots governance is the Block Development Officer (BDO), a figure often understated but absolutely crucial in ensuring that governance extends to the remotest parts of the country. The BDO plays a pivotal role in policy implementation and bridging the gap between centralised planning and ground-level execution, instrumental in shaping the rural landscape of the country. Delving into the life of a BDO in a drought-prone, rocky block with scant vegetation and infertile land, offers a glimpse into the work and challenges of these officers, and the block-level administrative system. What are the cultural barriers that get in the way of women owning land? Khabar Lahariya’s 23 years of reportage has shown that acute gender bias and prejudice in patriarchal societies leads to grave inequality in land ownership, along with specific cultural practices of different communities like the Bhunjia women of Odisha and Chattisgarh. Take a look at this report. In partnership with Womanity, we bring you #MeriZameenMeriPehchaan, an attempt to raise awareness on women's access to land rights.
