Clinical Medical laboratories performing MDT (Molecular Diagnostic Tests) will have to enroll their laboratory with Molecular Diagnostic Service Program through DEX (Diagnostics Exchange Registry). MDT is a complex process that incorporates retrieving DNA/RNA, Unique genetic code and analyzes the sequences for red flags that could pinpoint the potential emergence of a specific disease. Since MDT is much more specific and sensitive for both susceptibility and identification, they are associated with higher dollar values compared to traditional clinical testing. Also, there is a price point associated with these tests, CMS developed MOLDX program to identify and establish coverage and reimbursement. Once test registration and technical assessment is submitted, it takes 60 – 90 days for completion. Upon completion, DEX will issue a Z code specific to your laboratory. Z code is a unique five-character alpha numeric code indication the test performed. Insurance companies require these Z codes to be billed along with CPT codes. It helps payer to clearly understand the nature and process of test.
