The U.S. Department of Transportation fined American Airlines $50 million for failing to provide adequate wheelchair assistance and for damaging thousands of wheelchairs between 2019 and 2023. Despite some wheelchair users being injured, the exact number was not disclosed. The fine reflects the severity and frequency of the violations, with American mishandling over 10,760 wheelchairs and mobility scooters. American Airlines will receive a $25 million credit against the fine for investments and compensations it has already made to improve services. This includes spending over $175 million on infrastructure and training aimed at bettering the travel experience for people with disabilities. The airline has also reduced its rate of wheelchair and scooter mishandling by over 20%. This case is part of a broader initiative by the Transportation Department, led by Secretary Pete Buttigieg, to enforce regulations requiring airlines to swiftly and safely handle mobility aids and assist disabled passengers, signaling an end to tolerance for poor treatment of wheelchair users in the airline industry. #AmericanAirlines #Disability #DisabilityRights #DisabilityAdvocacy #MuchMuchSpectrum #Disabled #DisabilityPride #DisabilityInclusion #GlobalNews #AccessibilityMatters #AccessibleTravel #Wheelchair #WheelchairAccessible

Dayna Harvey, a swim instructor with 37 years of experience, has made it her mission to teach water safety to families of autistic children, who face a significantly higher drowning risk—160 times greater than neurotypical children. Many drownings occur near home in the afternoons, often when children wander. To address this, Harvey developed a water safety kit inspired by her experience with an autistic student. Central to her kit are the "Waiting Whales," five toy whales that teach kids boundaries and routines around water, whether in pools, bathtubs, or open water. The kit also includes an “I will wait mat,” encouraging children to stay put until given a thumbs-up by an adult, promoting active adult supervision. Harvey emphasizes the importance of putting distractions, like cell phones, aside to ensure safety. #AutismFamily #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #AutismMom #AutismDad #AutismParent #WaterSafety #MuchMuchSpectrum #PositiveNews #AutisticAdults #Neurodivergent
