#OpeningThisWeek “Arboretum - Ebb and Flow” is a new collection of paintings by Thukral & Tagra that respond to the relationship between the real and the digital worlds. Departing from their premise of the Arboretum that emerged during the pandemic, this second edition engages with the cultural history of trees. From Kashmir to Japan, Arboretum - Ebb and Flow maps the recent journeys of the artist-duo through hyper-realistic and intensely detailed painterly effects and unconventional shapes of the canvas. Reflecting on this multi-year journey, they note, ‘The cycle of the Arboretum has shifted within us. From being sites of contemplation, we started seeing trees as cultural artifacts that witness the social and political transitions of the world. The works in this exhibition draw inspiration from diverse landscapes, relaying stories on conflict, grounding the self, and the idea of home. The chinar trees of Kashmir, the peaceful landscapes of Japan, and the sense of belonging in Gurgaon (where we live) seeped into the creation of this series. This exhibition is a process of retelling stories through the trees that stay in us.’ The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 29th from 6 to 8pm at Nature Morte, Mumbai. India's premier contemporary art gallery
About us
Founded in New York's East Village in 1982 and closed in 1988, Peter Nagy revived Nature Morte in New Delhi in 1997 as a commercial gallery and a curatorial experiment. In the early years, Nature Morte became synonymous in India with challenging and experimental forms of art; championing conceptual, lens-based, and installation genres and representing a generation of Indian artists who went on to international exposure. Today, Nature Morte is the leader in its field in India with increasing visibility around the world, representing many of the most accomplished contemporary artists working in India today, fostering the most promising new talents, and introducing the works of international artists to the country. The gallery now has two exhibition spaces in New Delhi: the main gallery is located at the Dhan Mill complex in the Chhatarpur area, in a 400-square-meter space on the ground floor at the center of the complex. In addition, a secondary gallery is in the neighborhood of Vasant Vihar, measuring 70-square-meters and used for smaller shows. The Vasant Vihar space also houses the gallery’s offices, private viewing rooms, and expanded storage. A permanent gallery space in Mumbai was opened in Colaba in 2024. The gallery has maintained multiple branches in various locations: Berlin (2008-2014), Calcutta (2006-2009), and at the Oberoi Gurgaon hotel (2011-2014) and is owned by its co-directors: Aparajita Jain and Peter Nagy.

#OpeningToday Nature Morte is pleased to present “Blind Spot,” an exhibition of new works by the Delhi-based artist Aditya Pande. In “Blind Spot,” Aditya Pande presents a stunning array of new work showcasing his multi-disciplinary practice. The artworks seem to exist on several simultaneous yet oppositional planes, combining the playful, the grotesque, the animalistic, and the formal. Pande’s imagery is both alluring and cryptic, akin to cosmological diagrams—a space of primordial ooze. The constellations of Pande’s cosmology result from spills, stains, and tangles, employing a language devised of stutters, hiccups, and tics. The beings of Pande’s cosmos mimic aliens, insects, and phantasms. We may recognize ourselves in Pande’s characters—fabrications of our own imaginations, deluded by our own sensations, both welcoming and aloof. The exhibition opens today, August 14th, from 7 to 9 pm at Nature Morte, Dhan Mill, Delhi. #OnView Alicja Kwade’s installation “Superposition” at The Sculpture Park at Madhavendra Palace, Jaipur presented by Nature Morte and supported by RMZ Foundation. The work consists of interlocking steel frames that unfurl like a folding screen. Some frames are left bare, while four hold double-sided mirrors. The installation is accompanied by bronze chairs adorned with stone spheres from local Indian quarries, evoking distant worlds. Positioned strategically, the chairs mirror each other symmetrically or cast reflections within the mirrored panels, creating spatial confusion. Kwade’s installation invites contemplation into our existence and challenges systems meant to bring order to the universe. The Fourth Edition of The Sculpture Park, featuring works by 10 other artists, is on view until December 1st, 2024, at Madhavendra Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur, open every day from 11 am to 7 pm. For a guided walkthrough of the exhibitions please contact Ms. Jasbeer Kaur at +91-89556-78303 a few days before your visit. #OnView Nature Morte is pleased to present “The Wayfarer,” a solo show of paintings by Ramakrishna Behera. This is the artist’s first solo show in Mumbai, having exhibited works with us in New Delhi in 2010, 2016 and 2022. While many artists are at a loss for subjects to paint, Behera knows no such difficulties. An enthusiastic traveler, he ventures to specific locations to investigate historical monuments, natural marvels, geological strata, and the expansive sky which blankets it all. The destinations which inspired the works in our current exhibition span the globe from Australia to South America to China. “The Wayfarer” remains on view through August 10th. 📍Nature Morte, Dhanraj Mahal, Mumbai 🗓️ Monday-Saturday | 11 am-7 pm #naturemorte #NMartists #NMbombay #NMmumbai #artinmumbai #colaba #artcollectors #mumbaiartgallery #mumbaiart #artshowalert #RKbehra #ramakrishnabehera #ArtinMumbai

#NowOpen Nature Morte is proud to support Suhasini Kejriwal's hand-painted bronze sculptures, “Garden of Un-Earthly Delights,” presented at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Kejriwal constructs images and places that are at once gardens and urban jungles, both psychological constructs and cultural landscapes. In her sculptures of fictional, anthropomorphized plants that are composed of brightly colored body parts and foliage, she reflects upon the Human/Nature divide and how the gap between the real and the imaginary, the everyday and the fantastic, is constantly being negotiated in our own perception. While earlier versions of Kejriwal’s totemic sculptures featured embroidered surfaces and examined the relationship between hard and soft materials, this series reflects an evolution to hand-painted bronze and a greater scale, the hallmarks of monumental public sculpture. At the same time, Kejriwal’s sculptures defy the figural expectation of totems, showing the enduring power of nature across past and future, the otherworldly and everyday.
