The crossover between UX design and ethics Technology is everywhere in our lives now. The apps and websites we use every day affect how we learn, talk to friends, shop, and have fun. Because these things influence us so deeply, UX workers have a big responsibility. They need to think about how designs could accidentally push people in bad directions. Whether designs make users keep using too much or share private data, the effects matter. Read the full article at: https://lnkd.in/g--qXyyw

Product managers have a big job of understanding customers, coming up with solutions, and deciding how to build a product. While programmers code it and designers make it look good, product managers bridge business goals, tech needs, and what people want. Read the full article at: https://lnkd.in/gn-BgkGG

4 tips for making your microcopy impactful Microcopy refers to the short snippets of text found throughout digital products and interfaces. These small words can have an outsized impact on user experience, for better or worse. Here are some tips for crafting microcopy that leaves an impact. Keep it concise and scannable Users don't have time to read lengthy paragraphs when browsing menus or buttons. Microcopy must be short, direct and scannable at a glance. Convey meaning with as few words as possible without sacrificing clarity. For a settings page, "Show Advanced" is better than "Display additional technical options for power users." Voice assistants like Siri and Alexa have become ubiquitous, but relying solely on voice input for digital interfaces poses some significant usability issues. While voice can be useful as a supplement to other inputs, it should not be the only way to control a device or service. Lack of Accuracy Speech recognition technology has improved greatly, but misinterpretations are still common in noisy environments or when pronunciations are unclear. Getting the “wrong” command can lead to confusion and frustration for users. Voice input also lacks any confirmation – users have no way to check what the system heard before it acts. Creating a design system for a product or brand is a big upfront investment. But the job isn’t done once that initial framework is in place. Ongoing maintenance and evolution are key to ensuring the system remains useful and valuable over the long run. Neglecting maintenance inevitably leads to inconsistency as more components are added outside the core guidelines. Without governance, new features may start ignoring or outright breaking the fundamental styling, patterns, and standards established in the design system. This undermines the very purpose of having a coherent system in the first place. Some specific issues that can arise include incompatible color palettes being introduced, new typographic styles disrupting the visual hierarchy, or improper padding/margins breaking the grid. Imagery may start varying wildly in proportion, styling, or orientation. Icons become difficult to recognize as a family if they mutate freely. Read the full post at: https://lnkd.in/gvHz9DiN

As UX designers, we use research to understand people. But no matter how much we learn, there will always be unknowns. People can surprise us. What folks say they want may not match what engages them. Preferences differ based on who they are and where they live. And technology keeps changing what’s possible. While research helps, the future is unwritten. Not everything can be predicted. Our best designs may still surprise us in new ways. If we rely only on past research, we risk missing new ideas. User loyalty is invaluable but hard to come by in today’s crowded digital landscape. With countless options vying for people’s attention, standing out and keeping users engaged long-term is a true challenge. However, companies are increasingly finding that gamification provides the secret sauce for user experience loyalty. Gamification involves incorporating game mechanics and reward systems into interfaces to motivate specific behaviors. Things like leveling up, collecting badges, completing quests and challenges, leaderboards, and social sharing all tap into our innate human desires to achieve, compete, and seek approval.
