Thrilled to share that our recent presentation “Justice in the City: Framework for a Just Urban Transition in India” won an award for the best paper presentation at the India Just Transition Summit 2024, organized by WRI India and the Just Transition Research Centre IIT Kanpur 🌱🏙️ The presentation, co-authored by Dulari Parmar (YUVA), Vishwajeet Poojary (Asar Social Impact Advisors), and Roshni Nuggehalli (YUVA), highlighted the pathway for a Just Urban Transition. It focused on ensuring that urban climate actions consider the needs of all, especially the marginalized, while reimagining city planning for a low-carbon future. Key takeaways: • Expanding the just transition discourse beyond coal and power sectors to encompass cities • The need for urban planning that integrates justice and equity • Advocating for the involvement of the urban poor in city-level climate decision-making #JustTransition #UrbanPlanning #CityClimateAction #UrbanPoor #ClimateJustice #IITKanpur #WRIIndia #YUVA #InclusiveCities

'Our extensive engagement with youth has also emphasised that their holistic development cannot be separated from attention to their mental health and well-being.' Thanks to India Development Review (IDR) for featuring insights from our work on a community-led approach to mental health support and well-being. Doel Jaikishen Roshni Nuggehalli #mentalhealth #youth #india
#Youth | Young people growing up in low-income communities in Indian cities are at a higher risk of developing mental health concerns compared with the rest of the urban population. This is due to additional stressors in marginalised areas. These include the intersecting impacts of insecure housing and informal livelihoods, a paucity of basic services, and residents having to bear the brunt of discriminatory and oppressive social norms. Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) has been working with marginalised communities at the grassroots for the past four decades. They strive to enable people to claim their social, economic, and cultural rights, and emphasise on the holistic development of the youth—one that cannot be separated from attention to their mental health and well-being. This article by Roshni Nuggehalli and Doel Jaikishen summarises some of the key lessons YUVA learned while supporting young people’s mental health resilience and well-being. It also highlights why well-being programmes for young people work better when they are context-specific, person-centred, and peer-led. https://lnkd.in/dNnHpKr5

This DaanUtsav, we are keeping up the commitment to learning through skill sharing sessions facilitated by experts. In the past few days, young people across our centres have participated in the following sessions: - on preparing for jobs and building resilience for the changing career landscape - on mental health and wellbeing and practical tools that one can use - on visual storytelling, and how to strengthen skills in this area We are very grateful to our facilitators Umang Manchanda, Surabhi Kokane Slogan Murugan for sharing such valuable insights with the youth. Looking forward to continue to support young people's learning and development! #daanutsav #weleadchange #YUVA40 Daan Utsav

#GroundUpStories | “Young people need spaces in their localities where they can express themselves and say, ‘I’m scared of this.’ However, there is usually a dearth of such spaces, especially for marginalised communities. They are also hesitant to bring up these insecurities during discussions with counsellors, even if they have access to them—which is also not often the case.” Migrant youth located in informal settlements of Mumbai, Maharashtra, tend to face anxiety in unfamiliar environments. But exposure and the space to share these feelings can help. Read this article by Sachin Nachnekar to learn more. Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) *This is the fourth article in a 5-part series supported by the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies. This series is focused on how nonprofits can continue to stay relevant to the youth communities they serve and improve their youth-centric programmes by learning from organisation perspectives as well as the lived realities of young people themselves. What are the changes you're seeing individually and socially, since your association with YUVA? How can we further facilitate access to government schemes and basic facilities for those who are always at risk of being left out? In Vasai, we observed 40 years of YUVA, with a discussion on these questions and more! It was an engaging session for all the participants, and we felt energised with each other's presence and participation. This is how #weleadchange #YUVA40
