Meet identical twins Ishu and Vishu, who were born with hearing impairment. That did not stop them from facing life’s challenges with determination and optimism. When Ishu and Vishu expressed their wish to play football through OSCAR, a Reliance Foundation Education and Sports for All grantee that trains children from the underserved communities in football and life skills, they were concerned about how they would fit in. However, the coaches at OSCAR took it upon themselves to adapt the sessions to meet the twins' specific needs. They also guided other children in supporting the boys. Going over and above, they all began to learn sign language to communicate with Ishu and Vishu, showing kindness, and ensuring the twins felt included. This has been a transformative experience for all the children. They have not only developed essential life skills such as empathy but they have also mastered the art of collaboration, becoming strong advocates for inclusion within their community. Their remarkable story of care and support demonstrates hope for the future, showing that the next generation is committed to building a more inclusive world. Through his organization, the OSCAR Foundation, Ashok has reached more than 22,000 children, adolescents, and youth across underserved communities in India, delivering high-quality football training paired with essential life skills education. Ashok’s early experiences growing up in the Ambedkar Nagar slum inspired his commitment to community development, and he has since built OSCAR Foundation on a community-centric model. His impact has earned him several prestigious awards, including the CNN-IBN Real Hero Award, the Badlaav Humse Hai Award, and the Apollo Tyres Go the Distance Hero Award. As a recognized leader, Ashok is an Ashoka Youth Venture Fellow (2007) and an Acumen Fellow (2021), and he has spoken at numerous national and international forums on education and youth empowerment.
