The Temple Pavilions at the Jain sacred site of Palitana Temple Complex in Gujarat are designed to tread lightly on the earth while being deeply attuned to the cultural context. Built with glue-laminated and cross-laminated timber and minimal steel joinery, the pavilions are lightweight, durable, and carbon-negative. The softwood timber has been pre-treated for termite resistance without harming any creatures, aligning with the Jain principle of ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence). Currently, the landscaping for the first pavilion is underway. This design is the result of collaboration with London-based structural and project management consultancy Arup and Bristol-based timber specialists Xylotek - Advanced Timber. Here’s a #throwback to our design proposal for a mixed-gender hostel at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) campus as a part of a competition held by the IITB-AA (Alumni body). Hostel life is about nurturing relationships that last a lifetime. The design incorporates interconnected buildings woven around existing trees, allowing students to immerse themselves in the tranquillity of nature while having the opportunity to engage with the banter from play courts. Numerous opportunities for chance encounters are woven into the layout, fostering healthy social interactions and deeper connections among residents. Swipe to see glimpses of the design! 🏢📚 📸 1. A flight of stairs leads up to the plaza, which serves as a communal space and leads students to their respective hostel wings. 📸 2. The hostel dining area and plaza on the first level interact with each other via the skylights around the courtyards. 📸 3. Skylights bring natural light into the dining area, which is designed with diverse seating options. Our design approach for an upcoming hospitality project in Hampi involved careful preservation of the vegetation on site, including the cherished coconut palms, crafting a serene and contextual guest experience. Traditional water features, such as kunds, are further integrated into the complex, blurring the boundaries between the built environment and the natural surroundings. #StayTuned for more! At SJK Architects, our work explores meaningful engagement with various cultural practices – celebrating, questioning, or contemporising them as per the context. While designing the factory for Synergy Lifestyles, a textile company that exports local, homegrown products from in and around Tamil Nadu to global markets, we adopted a crafted approach in stark contrast to conventional industrial setups. The built-environment around Karur exhibits an interesting history of gable walls, a local stone quarry and many other traditions of country-wood joinery for doors. Drawing from the cultural cues of the village, we integrated layers of craft-based elements to enrich the user experience and spatial narrative: • The doors and windows are crafted using locally sourced planks of wood held with strap hinges. Inspired by vernacular houses, pivoting shutters were scaled up to suit the factory, eliminating frames to preserve local craftsmanship and ensure the viability of wooden windows. • For the flooring, Athangudi cement tiles are sourced from the nearby region of Chettinad. Our design for the Jain Heritage Museum in Koba, Gujarat, celebrates the rich heritage of Jainism and strides away from conventional ‘black box’ museums to create an expansive and climate-responsive layout with layered spaces planned around open courtyards with trees. Nearing completion, the museum will serve as a significant repository for the collection, preservation and dissemination of Jain artefacts and heritage. Materiality plays a crucial role in elevating the spatial experience. White marble is chosen for its calming aesthetics and cultural significance in Jainism. It has been used as a cladding material for the facade and structural members of the museum. Sacred motifs are embossed into the facade surface as references to cosmic diagrams or yantras, rendering subtle cues to the richness of the cultural artefacts displayed inside. Situated in Colaba, the cultural heart of Mumbai, our studio is more than just a workspace—it's a reflection of our values and aspirations. Despite our hybrid work setup, our in-office moments are dedicated to building strong personal connections. Whether it's a morning 'standup' via Zoom, a shared lunch of homemade food around the central table, or impromptu coffee runs to the kitchen garden down the street, a sense of community thrives within our office walls. ☕ Video Credits: Beautiful Homes Team #design #architecture #indianarchitects #designlife #officeculture #SJKArchitects

With the growing emphasis on competitive exams in our country, aspiring students in many cities face a critical shortage of adequate learning spaces, underscoring the need for urban planners and policymakers to integrate dedicated, well-regulated study environments within our communities. The recent incident in Rajendra Nagar underscores this pressing need. Partner Vaishali Shankar-Mangalvedhekar shared her insights with Hindustan Times journalist manoj sharma, emphasising the need for coaching centres to follow the same standards and design frameworks as educational institutions to ensure safe and efficient places for study. 🔗 Read more on how we can improve access to good learning spaces at the link: https://lnkd.in/gSakeTtR #design #architecture #indianarchitects #designthinking #learningspaces #SJKArchitects
