About us
Studio Lotus is a multi-disciplinary design practice founded in 2002—22 years on, it is one of the most path-breaking architectural firms in India, with Ambrish Arora, Sidhartha Talwar, Ankur Choksi, Asha Sairam and Harsh Vardhan at the helm as Principals. Fostered with a culture of learning and intra-preneurship, the work of the practice is grounded on the principles of Conscious Design, an approach that celebrates local resources, cultural influences, an inclusive process and a keen attention to detail. Studio Lotus aspires to craft spaces that address the emerging future of work, leisure and living; be it master plans, buildings or interiors, the practice’s process focuses on innovation that enriches their clients’ lives and businesses, adding value to all it touches. Working in a highly collaborative environment, Studio Lotus’ team of over 100 people combines distinct strengths over multiple domains to shape built work that is at the cutting edge of design thinking. The design process looks at sustainability through the multiple lenses of cultural, social and environmental impact. It is underpinned by an active engagement in integrating localised skills and resources with state-of-the-art materials and technologies. Some of the studio’s most significant projects include an upcoming museum complex for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture at the Qutb Shahi Gardens in Hyderabad; RAAS Hotels—in Jodhpur, Kangra and Lake Chhatrasagar; Krushi Bhawan in Odisha; high-rise residential and commercial developments for the Max Group; the Royal Enfield’s headquarters in Chennai; the headquarters of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Bhubaneswar; and three marquee projects within the Godrej Trees project in Vikhroli, Mumbai. Ongoing projects include a Visitor Centre within Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort precinct and several pan-India hospitality commissions, including those for the Taj & Oberoi Groups of Hotels.

At the core of Taj Sawai Ranthambore’s transformation are strategic programmatic interventions that redefine the guest experience by enhancing circulation, functionality, and spatial flow across the property. A Revitalized Arrival: The journey begins with a newly designed arrival sequence. An elevated, meandering boardwalk guides guests through native vegetation, creating an immersive introduction to the experience ahead. Welcoming Pavilions: The public buildings are conceptualised as a series of pavilions, each designed to offer views of terraces, water features, or surrounding landscapes. From an inviting arrival lounge, to a visual court, leading on to the semi-open bar-lounge, a succession of pavilions is designed to orient guests and create gentle transitions across varied experiences. Re-activated Poolside: The pool, originally a kund (stepwell), and its surrounds are brought to life through existing vestigial structures activated with public programmes including a specialty restaurant, open-air grill, whiskey lounge, al-fresco bar, and games lounge. Bungalows in the Jungle: Courtyards in guest villas have been landscaped to craft private cocoons, while interiors have been restructured to dissolve the distinction between the built and the landscape. Besides contributing to a cooler microclimate, strategic landscape interventions can optimise the functionality of outdoor spaces for year-round use. In our recent redevelopment of Taj Sawai Ranthambore, various landscape strategies are utilised to create intrigue, provide shade, enhance thermal comfort, and ensure privacy, ultimately reconnecting the property with its forested setting: 🌳 Dense native vegetation bordering the edges of a meandering boardwalk revives the arrival experience, creating an intimate pathway that belies the property’s scale. 🌻 Foliage trees, flowering shrubs, lawns, and creepers provide shaded lounging spots for year-round comfort while offering visual relief from the poolside's stone masonry walls. 🌿 Low-height planters serve as discreet partitions on the all-day terrace overlooking the pool, transforming the previously overlooked space into a vibrant hub for unwinding and socialising. Drawing inspiration from the existing colonial-inspired built form and the lush Aravali landscape adjoining the site, the overarching design concept for Taj Sawai Ranthambore’s revitalisation seeks to reconnect the property with its natural setting. The public building is reimagined as a series of light, airy pavilions that bring the forest in, while the guest rooms are envisioned as bungalows in the jungle. Through considered programmatic and landscape interventions coupled with a locally-inspired material and craft narrative, the design establishes an authentic, contextually appropriate identity for the project. This week started with a visit to our studio by Sou Fujimoto. Besides discussing with Ambrish Arora their opening talk at India Design ID Mumbai on the 27th, along with Oliva Sartogo, Sou generously gave his time to a Q&A with our team about his process and design philosophy and left us all inspired by his candour, deep insight, and humility. #StudioCulture #SouFujimoto #IDMumbaiTalk #IndiaDesign #StudioLotus #Architecturetalks
