Creating Meaning, Celebrating Context
About us
Studio Lotus is a multi-disciplinary design practice founded in 2002—22 years on, it is one of the most path-breaking architectural firms in India, with Ambrish Arora, Sidhartha Talwar, Ankur Choksi, Asha Sairam and Harsh Vardhan at the helm as Principals. Fostered with a culture of learning and intra-preneurship, the work of the practice is grounded on the principles of Conscious Design, an approach that celebrates local resources, cultural influences, an inclusive process and a keen attention to detail. Studio Lotus aspires to craft spaces that address the emerging future of work, leisure and living; be it master plans, buildings or interiors, the practice’s process focuses on innovation that enriches their clients’ lives and businesses, adding value to all it touches. Working in a highly collaborative environment, Studio Lotus’ team of over 100 people combines distinct strengths over multiple domains to shape built work that is at the cutting edge of design thinking. The design process looks at sustainability through the multiple lenses of cultural, social and environmental impact. It is underpinned by an active engagement in integrating localised skills and resources with state-of-the-art materials and technologies. Some of the studio’s most significant projects include an upcoming museum complex for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture at the Qutb Shahi Gardens in Hyderabad; RAAS Hotels—in Jodhpur, Kangra and Lake Chhatrasagar; Krushi Bhawan in Odisha; high-rise residential and commercial developments for the Max Group; the Royal Enfield’s headquarters in Chennai; the headquarters of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Bhubaneswar; and three marquee projects within the Godrej Trees project in Vikhroli, Mumbai. Ongoing projects include a Visitor Centre within Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort precinct and several pan-India hospitality commissions, including those for the Taj & Oberoi Groups of Hotels.

“The entry point for us is the story the project seeks to tell. And a big part of the story is the process. And we deliberately ensure that this process is fluid and emergent, with the end result being the diversity we hold so dear.” Principal Harsh Vardhan discusses design philosophy, projects, processes and the evolving role of architecture in creating meaningful spaces with Rethinking The Future as part of their Design Dialogues series. In the conversation Harsh emphasises on how the cross-pollination of ideas, expertise, and perspectives—both within the studio and with consultants, craftspeople, and clients—drives creative synergy, leading to outcomes that are far greater than the sum of their parts. Head to the link below to read the whole conversation. https://lnkd.in/gSH9ms8a #StudioLotus #ConsciousDesign #DesignDialogues #RTF #DesignLeadership #InclusiveDesign #CollaborativeDesign #IndianDesigners #DesignInnovation

Construction is on in full swing for Phase I (3,00,000 sqft) of Indian Institute of Art and Design campus, with robust planning enabling efficient, fast-paced work on site. Structurally, the hybrid of precast and metal, with dry construction done off-site speeds construction. Cladding on walls is limited, striking a balance between functionality and design. False ceilings are minimized to expose services, aiming for frugal, unpretentious, well-resolved building tectonics. The new campus we designed for Indian Institute of Art and Design in Gurgaon encourages learning beyond the classroom to promote flexibility for digital and peer learning. Circulation areas are designed to be larger than necessary, inviting users to occupy and interact within them. We envisioned the corridor as streets, creating an interactive space that can be transformed into exhibition areas, allowing student work to be showcased for their annual and half-year displays. The public staircase, with its wide steps and multiple mid-landings, provides opportunities for connection and conversation. Every corner of the campus serves as an anchor, inviting activity and collaboration. Our design for the new Indian Institute of Art and Design campus in Gurgaon seeks to bridge the gap in the city’s public infrastructure. Designed to be a porous, open-to-public, sociocultural destination for the people of Gurgaon, Delhi and Manesar, multi-purpose halls, cafés and workshops are strategically placed to be accessible during holidays and term vacations, creating community spaces for interaction and collaboration. Construction is in full swing at the Sitara Himalaya Retreat in Manali, where we are adding a new intervention to enhance the indoor-outdoor experience for the guests. Connected by a scenic walkway to the existing hotel, this new conservatory will allow visitors to relax in nature while enjoying expansive 270-degree views of the Manali and Solang Valleys. Designed as an extended living room, this multifunctional space will feature an indoor garden, which can easily transform into a bar, dining area, lounge, or stargazing spot, offering a versatile environment for relaxation and entertainment throughout the year.
