Government and environmental agencies in Samoa are on alert after a New Zealand Navy ship caught fire and sank off the south coast of Upolu. The HMNZS Manawanui - a specialist dive and hydrographic vessel - was conducting a reef survey when it hit the reef on Saturday night. Seventy-five crew and passengers were taken off the vessel by liferafts and other boats which came to the rescue. Samoa fire commissioner Tanuvasa Petone said the ship caught fire and sank on Sunday morning after a successful rescue. Three on board needed hospital treatment, he said. "They're all on land. They are safe and sound apart from just a few individuals that… have some minor injuries, and so we treated them at the site and transferred to them to the hospital."

President Joe #Biden praised the swift action of the 22 Indian-origin crew members aboard the container ship 'Dali' for their crucial mayday call during a bridge collision in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26. This call helped avert additional casualties by alerting authorities to halt traffic, saving lives as the #Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River. Despite the quick evacuation, six construction workers are missing, presumed lost. The incident, resulting from a reported power loss on 'Dali', has halted maritime operations at the Port of Baltimore and highlighted the importance of robust infrastructure. Biden has called for federal funding to repair the bridge and restore port functionality, emphasizing the crew's role in preventing a greater tragedy and the ongoing search for the missing workers.

After the disastrous collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, a cartoon by Foxford Comics on X depicting the Indian crew of the container ship Dali in a derogatory manner has ignited widespread outrage. The ship, which collided with the bridge causing significant damage, had its crew lauded by President Joe Biden for their swift actions to alert authorities, potentially averting further tragedy. Yet, the cartoon's demeaning representation, showing crew members in loincloths amid chaos, faced criticism for its racist undertones and mocking tone, amassing over 4.2 million views. Critics, including Indian economist Sanjeev Sanyal, have defended the crew's conduct, highlighting their pivotal role in minimizing the incident's impact. The backlash underscores the racial insensitivity of the cartoon and disrespects the crew's heroism. Meanwhile, the bridge's collapse presents a major economic challenge, particularly impacting Baltimore's port operations, with nearby states stepping in to lessen the supply chain fallout.

According to Jeffrey Pritzker, the executive vice president of Brawner Builders, six workers from the company are believed to have perished in the incident, while one worker has been hospitalized. Pritzker mentioned that the crew was positioned at the center of the #bridge when the collision occurred, leading to the collapse of the structure. Despite ongoing efforts, the bodies of the workers have not been located. Pritzker explained that due to the depth of the water and the elapsed time since the accident, it is presumed that the workers have lost their lives.

The #MARCOS India's elite #Marine Commandos, stand as a formidable force against maritime threats, earning their reputation as pirates' biggest nightmare. Known for their rigorous training and versatility, these commandos operate across all terrains, embodying the pinnacle of military prowess. A testament to their exceptional skills was the recent rescue of the MV Ruen's 17 crew members from #pirates off #Somalia coast. This operation showcased the Indian Navy's advanced capabilities, involving a navy destroyer, patrol ship, the airdrop of commandos from an Indian Air Force C-17 transporter, drones, and a P-8 surveillance jet. The operation's success, highlighted by the capture of dozens of pirates without any casualties, underscores the Indian Navy's strategic and coordinated approach to modern warfare. John Bradford of the #Council on Foreign Relations praised the operation, emphasizing the minimized risk and the use of a comprehensive force, marking the Indian Navy as a leader in special forces operations. The MARCOS' role in such missions not only deters piracy but also reinforces India's commitment to global #maritime security.
