The panel discussion on future-proofing agri-food: Adaptation approaches to navigating climate vagaries focused on systematic approaches to enabling the climate adaptation transition for agri-food systems, including which innovations and, policy and financial levers can be leveraged to this end. The panelists touched upon the scope and scale of the adaptation challenge in agri-food (particularly in the context of a smallholder-dominant ecosystem), frameworks for evaluating the type and extent of transition required, promising technology innovations and financial mechanisms to enable transition, their scalability potential, what barriers they face, and the policy, investment and institution support they require. Agriculture contributes to 14% of global carbon emissions. Starting the conversation about mitigation options for agriculture while maintaining food security is especially important now. This challenge has a third dimension in India because small-holding farmers can't afford to take a yield cut. Savanah seeds is promoting DSR cultivation in Agriculture, IFC is working towards adopting sustainable dairy practices and Bambrew is innovating to replace plastics in inputs / output packaging with bamboo based bio-plastics. CEEW is working towards multi-level interventions oriented towards change in behaviours of different stakeholders including, the farmers by altering farming practices, consumers changing consumptions habits, processors by decentralizing processing and supply chain by replacing plastics and fuel used. The panel discussion highlighted the methods created by such organizations to mitigate the effects of agriculture on climate. ThinkAg Harvesting Tomorrow Summit 2024 Recap: The second panel on deploying data for disruption track was on Remote Sensing: Leveraging applications of earth observation data in agriculture. There is a huge base of data that is available from remote sensing. However, this data is not being collected based on the needs of the end users and their respective data requirements. The panelists highlighted how important it is to understand where the data user stands today in terms of their current access to data, what additional data would be useful for improved decision making. They also discussed that dialogue needs to happen between the technology and end user companies to understand what is technically possible to be collected, what is the accuracy of this data, is that accuracy sufficient to make interpretations and decisions. The speakers stressed that to improve the acceptance of remote sensing, there must be clear, honest communication about its capabilities and limitations. Researchers and technology providers need to focus on addressing key variables like crop type, crop area, and the sowing window, while acknowledging that more complicated factors like yield estimation may require complementary field data. ThinkAg Harvesting Tomorrow Summit 2024 Recap: The first panel on deploying data for disruption track was on Systematic Scaling: Architecting Digital Public Infrastructure for Agri-Food Systems. The speakers provided the following recommendations to address the various challenges faced by framers: In many states, agricultural credit is typically tied to landowners, which creates a significant issue for tenant farmers who actually work the land but do not benefit from credit subsidies. The panelists highlighted how a Digital Public Infrastructure that accurately identifies the individuals farming the land—rather than just the landowners—could fundamentally transform agricultural credit systems. They also mentioned that to address data privacy and security related concerns, the government must play a pivotal role as an enabler, using Digital Public Goods and policies like the Digital Personal Data Protection Act to establish clear guidelines for data usage and farmer consent. The panelists discussed that the key to successful adoption of data-sharing systems is in building trust and showing immediate results. Farmers are more likely to adopt new technologies if they can see immediate benefits, such as access to transparent market linkage options and receiving fair pricing for their produce. Farmers’ have broken and disjoint experience of data platforms. This challenge could be addressed by creating a uniform open network which can give consistent journey for a farmer and can respond to farmers queries which come in any form (voice, vernacular text etc) with authentic / validated services or products is required. Many tech companies in the agriculture space often deviate from their core competencies by attempting to develop full-stack solutions. Instead of creating complete end-to-end platforms, they should focus on their core business proposition and leverage upon existing open networks / interfaces that enable seamless interaction between product or service providers and farmers. Confusion pertaining to data ownership and monetization rights is another major challenge. Geospatial technologies can help identifying crop type, crop area, sowing windows, and possibly soil moisture or nitrogen content etc. NSN Murty, Rama Devi Lanka, Bertram (Bert) Dsouza, Siddharth Prakash, and Vijayasekar Kalavakonda Godrej Agrovet Limited SatSure Rabo Foundation Bram Spann 🌱💡Dheeraj Mutreja Ritu Verma Ram Kaundinya Raman Ahuja Hemendra Mathur Sannidhi Srinivasan Abhijit Goswami Dr. Pallavi Tak #ThinkAg #ThinkAgHarvestingTomorrowSummit2024 #foodtech #agritech #futureofagriculture #startupindia #agribusiness #ThinkAgIndia #DeployingDataForDisruption
