The way we move contributes to almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last twenty years, India has experienced a surge in mobility and transportation related emissions, with GHG emissions increasing 224% between 2000 and 2019 [International Energy Agency (IEA)]. Cities, which are rapidly growing, have felt the brunt of this mobility shift, with many cities experiencing unbearable congestion, poor public transportation provision, and rising air pollution. India is at a pivotal moment to shape the future of transport emissions, especially given that only 30% of urban residents rely on private vehicles.(Indian Institute for Human Settlements) Our upcoming dialogue, on Friday, October 4th, will explore approaches to transition to low carbon urban mobility. #blog While AI holds significant promise for accelerating India’s energy and digital transitions, it is not a silver bullet. Its success in accelerating India’s energy transition depends on addressing broader challenges related to governance, equity, and infrastructure, as well as fostering collaboration between different sectors. Based on the insights derived from the latest #TalkingAboutTransitions dialogue featuring Priya Donti, Simran Grover, Siddharth Sareen and Angelina Chamuah, this blog outlines the opportunities and challenges of harnessing artificial intelligence in meeting India’s energy goals. #NIAC: Yesterday, the final panel session at the two-day National Impacts and Adaptation Convening (NIAC) on ‘Levers of Action’ was moderated by Dr Vikrom Mathur from Transitions Research. The panel, which included Dr Divya Sharma from the Climate Group, Shruti Narayan from C40 Cities, and Rishika Das Roy from India Climate Collaborative, deliberated on capacities and governance at the sub-national and city levels. The discussion focused on using improved urban and master planning as entry points for change and mainstreaming, alongside adaptation finance as a lever for change. They also addressed issues with taxonomy and emphasised the need for better tracking, institutional frameworks, and risk architecture. #ClimateAction #AdaptationSolutions Aaran Patel The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation

#watch: How can we tackle the challenge of data existing in silos? In July, Transitions Research co-hosted an event in Goa on ‘Catalysing AI for Climate Action and Finance’, which brought together thought leaders, practitioners, and innovators working in India to explore how AI can be harnessed to design climate-resilient infrastructure and mobilise finance. We took this opportunity to ask experts about their perspectives on solving critical challenges in implementing AI on the ground. During a conversation with Arvind Mayaram, Chairman of the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur (IDSJ), about data quality as a prominent challenge in utilising AI for climate action, he noted that while quality data exists within different governmental departments, internal communication among these departments is crucial for implementing and catalysing AI for climate solutions. Arvind Mayaram has an extensive background in working with the government in several top-tier positions and has most recently represented India as the Finance Deputy in the #G20 and #BRICS. Organised in collaboration with: New Indian Consumer Initiative (an INDIC initiative) and Climate Bonds Initiative Under the aegis of: AI Knowledge Consortium With support from: Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
