Transforming urban food systems using regenerative agriculture. Social Enterprise | Nutrition | Carbon Farming
About us
From Soil to Soul: We are a bio farming-focused social enterprise designed to address three of the world’s most pressing concerns – nutrition deficiency, climate change and farmer livelihoods – simultaneously! We do so through a unique, hub-and-spoke model designed to be sustainable and scalable. Regenerative Agriculture: Our farming practices pushes the bar well beyond conventional organic…into standards that are now being recognised as Regenerative Organic (a term initiated by The Rodale Institute). Some of its key dimensions include: companion cropping, crop sequencing, photosynthesis support and soil life enhancement through microbial culture…all of which significantly enhances the bio-availability and nutrient density of the produce. This unique new design was recently awarded the Food System Vision 2050 Prize by Rockefeller Foundation and has been selected as one of the finalists at the Global TFF Challenge 2021 – “How to feed 10 billion people by 2050 on a hotter planet?”. This design was born out of two decades of experimentation by Naandi Foundation – a legacy we cherish…It started with the Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh - where marginalised tribal farmers transformed the region and created a global brand of single origin coffee. A variation of the design was then implemented in a very different terroir – the draught stricken Wardha region of Maharashtra – to transform a highly industrialized mono-cropped landscape into a nutrient-rich regenerative farmscape. Collaborating for the Future: This humble attempt of ours to create a prototype for a food system of the future necessarily includes collaborating with all key actors of the food system such as policy makers, trade and the F&B industry. We look forward to meaningful and creative collaborations with key institutions and individuals and together building a nutrition-secure future – for all.

🌱 Farmer-Centric Design, Consumer-Centric Product 🌱 It was a pleasure to share our 5-year journey in developing a model that makes regenerative agriculture the first choice for small landholding farmers—creating a profitable, convenient, and efficient transition from conventional to regenerative practices. Grateful for the opportunity to present at platforms like Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS2024), World Food Forum, and IFT First, which brought together the brightest minds in food systems. Even more exciting were the rich discussions and meaningful connections that emerged, fueling our shared commitment to building a much stronger food system. A special thank you to Seeding The Future Foundation Bernhard Van Lengerich, PhD. #RegenerativeAgriculture #SmallFarmers #FoodSystems #CarbonPositive

We recently held an enriching farmer training event in Sangamner, Pune, with our partner farmers from Sangamner and Narayangaon. Our team shared key insights into regenerative agriculture, covering everything from making bio inputs and understanding the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in compost making to essential RA practices like "prevention is better than cure." We also explained the lab tests we conduct and shared case studies showcasing the effectiveness of our bio inputs. We reassured our farmers of our commitment to making bio inputs more accessible, simplifying their farming journey. Having worked with the amazing farmers of Sangamner and Narayangaon for 2 years, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in soil fertility and crop yields, and we look forward to continuing this journey of growth together. A big congratulations to our standout farmers who were awarded for their POP compliance, timely crop deliveries, and excellent crop performance! 🌾👏 Together, we’re cultivating a brighter, more sustainable future. 🌍💪 #FarmerTraining #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableFarming #SoilHealth #BioInputs #FarmingInnovation #Agriculture #agricultureinindia #soilhealthmatters #kisstheground #urbanfarmsco #farmtofork #climatepositive

🌍 Happy World Environmental Health Day! 🌱 🌍 At Urban Farms Co., we know that the health of our environment is directly tied to the health of our communities, our food, and our future. That’s why we’re committed to practices that protect and regenerate the land, air, and water we all depend on. Our focus on regenerative agriculture helps create ecosystems where the soil, plants, animals, and people can all thrive together. By reducing chemical inputs, fostering biodiversity, and working with nature, we’re helping to build a healthier planet for all. This World Environmental Health Day, let’s reflect on how our choices impact the environment – and how we can make every action count toward a greener, more sustainable future. Because when we take care of the Earth, it takes care of us. 🌿💧 #WorldEnvironmentalHealthDay #SustainableFarming #RegenerativeAgriculture #EnvironmentalHealth #UrbanFarmsCo #directfromfarm #soilhealth #soilhealthmatters #kisstheground #climatepositive #chemicalfree #nutrientdense

🌱 Meet Our Soil’s Superheroes: Earthworms! 🪱 🌱 We’re thrilled to share that our farms are teeming with earthworms – one of nature’s best indicators of healthy, living soil! But why are these humble creatures such a big deal? Here’s how earthworms help transform our soil into a powerhouse of fertility: ✨ Natural Soil Aerators – As earthworms tunnel through the soil, they create channels that allow air and water to reach plant roots more easily. This improves root growth and helps crops thrive. 🌾 Nutrient Boosters – Earthworms consume organic matter and break it down into nutrient-rich castings (worm poop!), which enrich the soil and provide plants with essential nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. 💧 Water Retention – By loosening the soil, earthworms also help it retain more moisture, reducing the need for irrigation and making plants more resilient during dry periods. But here’s what’s really fascinating – earthworms have porous bodies, which makes them extremely sensitive to chemicals in the soil. The fact that they’re thriving on our farms is a testament to our commitment to chemical-free, regenerative agriculture! 🦸♂️🌿 Without harmful chemicals, our soils are safe havens where earthworms can flourish, working alongside bacteria and fungi to create the perfect environment for nutrient-dense, healthy crops. 🌍 At Urban Farms Co., we’re proud to let nature do what it does best – regenerate the soil and grow healthier, more sustainable produce. #RegenerativeAgriculture #HealthySoil #NoChemicals #SoilHealthMatters #SustainableFarming #UrbanFarmsCo #farmtofork #directfromfarm #kisstheground #carbonpositive #IndianAgriculture

🌱 Exciting News from Our Farms! 🌱 We’ve recently spotted something incredible on our soil – mushrooms! 🍄 At Urban Farms Co., #RegenerativeAgriculture actively encourages the return of beneficial fungi to the soil. Unlike conventional practices such as tillage, which disrupt and reduce fungal networks, RA does the opposite! We promote no-till and other soil-friendly methods that protect and rebuild these networks. These fungi might look small, but they play a HUGE role in improving soil and plant health. Their presence signals a thriving fungal network below the soil surface, which is key to healthy plants and a vibrant ecosystem. 🌿 Mushrooms are part of a vast mycorrhizal network that works in harmony with plant roots to: ✨ Boost nutrient supply – The fungal network beneath the soil improves the supply of superior nutrients. 💧 Improve water intake – Their intricate underground web helps plants absorb water more efficiently, even during dry conditions. 🌞 Reduce plant stress – By enhancing nutrient absorption and moisture retention, mushrooms help plants withstand environmental stresses like drought and disease. All of this contributes to stronger, more resilient crops, healthier soils, and a more sustainable future for agriculture. 🌍 #sustainablefarming #agricultureinindia #farmtotable #directfromfarm #nutrientdense #chemicalfree #freshvegetables #urbanfarmsco #soilhealthmatters #kisstheground #carbonpositive
