  • The Complex Challenge of Managing Turkey's Stray Dog Population In a recent move, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party submitted a controversial bill to parliament, aiming to address the country's significant stray dog population. The bill, however, has sparked a fierce debate between animal rights activists and advocates for public safety, highlighting the complex nature of the issue. Turkey is home to an estimated four million stray dogs, a number that has been steadily growing due to ineffective implementation of existing animal birth control regulations. The proposed legislation seeks to manage this issue by removing stray dogs from the streets and placing them in shelters, where they would be neutered and spayed. While the initial proposal included a clause for euthanizing unadopted dogs within 30 days, public backlash has led to a revised version. This version mandates euthanasia only for dogs that are rabid, aggressive, or deemed untrainable. The bill also calls for improvements in shelter conditions and encourages adoption. Despite these measures, the underlying problem remains unaddressed: simply rounding up stray dogs and confining them to shelters is not a sustainable solution. The core of the issue lies in controlling the stray dog population through robust birth control programs and comprehensive pet ownership laws. Why Sheltering Alone Won't Work 1. Overcrowding and Inhumane Conditions: Shelters are often overcrowded and underfunded, leading to poor living conditions for the animals. 2. Temporary Fix: Sheltering does not address the root cause of the stray dog population. With gaps in birth control programs and pet ownership laws, the problems will persist. 3. Adoption Rates: Encouraging adoption is a positive step, but it cannot keep pace with the rate at which stray dogs are reproducing. The Need for Strong Birth Control Programs Effective population control requires a comprehensive and well-funded stray dog birth control program. This involves: • Widespread Neutering and Spaying • Public Awareness Campaigns • Collaboration with Veterinary Services Strengthening Pet Ownership Laws. These should include: • Mandatory Neutering/Spaying of pets unless the owner has a breeding license. • Mandatory registration and microchipping of pets to ensure accountability and reduce abandonment. • Strict penalties for pet abandonment Addressing Turkey’s stray dog problem requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond sheltering. Implementing robust birth control programs and enforcing stringent pet ownership laws are crucial steps towards sustainable population management. Without these measures, the cycle of stray dog population growth will continue, and the challenges will remain unresolved. It's time for Turkey to adopt a humane, effective, and long-term strategy to manage its stray dog population. Together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of both the stray dogs and the communities they inhabit.

  • VOSD Trust™ CSR Employee Engagement Programme at Adobe 2nd July 2024 | Prestige Platina Tech Park, Bengaluru. The Voice of Stray Dogs (VOSD) Trust™ conducted an employee engagement programme at the Adobe office in Prestige Platina Tech Park, Bengaluru. The primary goal of this programme was to raise awareness about the plight of stray dogs in our country and support the lives of the 1700 dogs under VOSD’s permanent care at our Sanctuary. The event featured active participation from Adobe employees, who contributed to building beds for paralyzed dogs and assembling catching nets. Awareness Session: The VOSD team commenced the event by sharing information with Adobe employees about VOSD’s mission. Information on pet ownership laws, dog feeders' role and responsibilities, and various animal welfare laws in India were provided. Myths surrounding rabies were debunked, providing factual information to the attendees. Hands-on Activities: Adobe employees enthusiastically participated in building 30 beds for paralysed dogs living permanently in the VOSD Sanctuary. 5 dog-catching nets were also assembled during the event. A VOSD merchandise stall was set up, featuring graphic T-shirts with funky and cool designs. The donations received from merchandise sales were directed towards supporting the dogs at VOSD. Memorable Moments: The event was marked by high energy and excitement, with both Adobe employees and the VOSD team working collaboratively. The engagement programme resulted in tangible benefits for the rescued and special needs dogs in VOSD’s permanent care. The enthusiasm and dedication of the Adobe employees, combined with the VOSD team’s efforts, highlighted the positive impact of community involvement in animal welfare. The event was a resounding success, showcasing the power of collaboration and community engagement in supporting animal welfare initiatives. The day was filled with smiles and tail wags, underscoring the incredible impact that such programmes can have on the lives of animals and the people who care for them. We sincerely thank Mr. Pratap Singh Khalsa and Mr. Amit Aggarwal for their support in organising this event. • HOW AN ABANDONED PET DOG FOUND HOPE AND A HOME Anupam saw a beautiful, white dog chasing cars on a street one day. He looked lost, confused, extremely scared and was evidently abandoned. His little dark eyes seemed to be searching for his human family. For the next few days, the kind man gave the dog food and water but the pooch kept getting weaker. One day, the little dog limped towards Anupam's car and scratched the window pane with his paw, as if he were begging to be let in, the sight moved Anupam and he decided to take the sweet lad home with the intent to foster him. The little pooch had an injured leg, a tail cut in half and multitudes of ticks on his body. Living on the streets had also taken a major toll on his mental health and he seemed sad and forlorn most of the time. Anupam and his wife Debarupa named their new dog 'Hope'. In the next few days, Anupam singlehanded nursed little hope back to health with his tender loving care. Debarupa tried finding a forever home for Hope and for this purpose they even brought the dear boy to their Bangalore home. However, she wasn't satisfied with the applicants and only wanted the best home for Hope, who had endured great suffering. As the days went by, Debarupa and Hope's bond grew stronger and she started seeing herself as his Mom. And finally, the couple decided to adopt Hope themselves. Their beautiful family grew with Hope now being a permanent member. Anupam and Debarupa now have four lovely dogs: Hope, Kutush, Bhutum and Kutkuti. Thinking back on their decision to adopt Hope, the couple said, "We couldn't afford to lose a baby who had just been given a second chance at life." And as for Hope, the gods didn't give up on him and a miracle occured just when he was about to lose hope. Today, little boy Hope has a full life and a loving family. Once, he was lost and lonely and hungry, now he has people who never let him out of their sight. We are so glad fortunes changed for this boy and he is getting to live a life full of rasgullas and vanilla ice-cream. Hope's story is deeply touching and inspires us all to 'Adopt' and never abandon a pet. If you have an adoption story to tell, please write to us on info@vosd.in. We'd love to share it with our readers. VOSD is India's largest non-profit organisation for dogs.
