The Deep Dive Session on "WEFE Nexus – Towards Common Grounds to Strengthen Water Security," at #GSTIC2024 had experts discussing the profound interconnection between Water, Energy, Food, and Ecosystems. Panelists from India, Belgium, and South Korea explored strategies for integrated management, efficient water use, and leveraging innovative technologies. The panellists were: Ms. katrien van hooydonk, Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek (VITO), Belgium and co-lead internationalisation Water4All Ms. Archana Varma, Mission Director, National Water Mission (NWM), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India Mr. Anshuman ., Director, Water Resources Division, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India Mr. Rishi Srivastava, Director, International Commission on Irrigation & Drainage (ICID), India Mr. Pieter Lodewijks, Program Manager, Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek (VITO)/EnergyVille Dr. Pothula Srinivasa Brahmanand , Project Director, Water Technology Center, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, India Dr. Hwanil Park, Chief Director/Senior Research Fellow, Division of Global Innovation Strategy, Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), South Korea Key takeaways included: - Urgency for Sustainable Policies: Without sustainable measures, India may become water-scarce by 2050, with per capita water availability dropping from 1700 CM to below 1000 CM. - Water Use Efficiency: Improving water efficiency, particularly in irrigation, is critical to meet the growing demands for water and food sustainably. - Community Involvement in Water Conservation: Government missions emphasise that water conservation must be a whole-of-society effort. Wherever communities, particularly women, are involved, better water management, agricultural practices, and livelihoods have been observed. - Technological Solutions: Technologies like AI, IoT, and precision irrigation are being explored to enhance water and energy efficiency. Precision irrigation in Karnataka and smart water loss management systems in Thailand were highlighted as examples. - Need for Water Storage: Developing water storage, especially in the Brahmaputra and Ganga basins, and reviving traditional local water conservation methods were proposed as essential strategies for long-term water security. - Demand-Side Management: The session underscored the need for better demand-side management in all sectors—agriculture, energy, and industry—to reduce water wastage and promote efficient use. - Multi-stakeholder Engagement: Effective management of the WEFE nexus requires collaboration across sectors and stakeholders. As the final speaker at the Special Session on Water Sustainability, Dr. Sumit K. Gautam, Technical Expert on Ganga Rejuvenation at GIZ India, shared valuable insights on wastewater treatment. He emphasised that technology is no longer the challenge—the key lies in creating an enabling environment with support from government and businesses. He mentioned a study conducted in the city of Panipat with the following key points: 🔹 City of Panipat was chosen for a detailed feasibility assessment, where 7 STPs are operational. The city’s industries, primarily reliant on groundwater, must be encouraged to embrace reused water with focus on TDS levels. 🔹 Ultrafiltration proves to be more feasible than RO, and the government’s role is essential in running tertiary treatment plants. Groundwater recharge for direct potable use is still not viable. The NMCG and Jal Shakti Ministry are actively working on ground-level implementation of these models, aiming for sustainable water solutions. #WastewaterTreatment #Sustainability #WaterReuse #GSTIC2024 VITO TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute G-STIC: Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Community
