Harvesting Change in Sustainable Aquaculture 🐟 💧 In this episode of our #EnvironmentStories, we highlight sustainable and integrated aquaculture practices that can not only slow land degradation, but also restore ecosystems and help improve the livelihoods of communities that rely on land and water resources. In addition, sustainable aquaculture plays an important role in ensuring food and nutrition security for India's rural population, as fish is a rich source of high-quality protein and essential micronutrients. In the Indian states of #Assam and #Odisha, we are working with our partners to cultivate nutrient-rich aquatic foods with a low environmental and carbon footprint. We are realising this through: 💡 Capacity Building: Providing technical training for farmers on sustainable fishery and foxnuts production as well as strengthening the organisational capacity of farmers' institutions for efficient resource management. 📙 Access to Information: Installing ‘Agroecological Kiosks’ for access to important information, such as funding schemes, best practices and new farming techniques. 🐟 Economic Empowerment: Providing business development training to promote entrepreneurship within the #aquaculture value chain and imparting financial literacy to enhance farmers' financial skills. 👩🌾 Gender Inclusion: Prioritising the role of women fish and foxnut farmers in the aquaculture sector by working with women self-help groups (#SHGs) and employing gender transformative capacity building methods. 🤝 Policy Support: Providing policy advice for informed decision-making, in line with government support programmes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme (#MGNREGS) and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (#PMMSY). Our joint efforts contribute to the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between India and Germany, which declares #agroecology as a priority area of bilateral cooperation. World Zoonoses Day: One World, One Health 🐒🌍 Have you ever heard of the #Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also known as monkey fever? KFD is a viral disease that can infect humans and monkeys. In the most severe cases, it can be fatal. KFD is one example of zoonotic diseases, also known as #zoonoses, infectious diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans. This year’s #WorldZoonosesDay highlights the importance of preventing zoonotic diseases. Effective prevention measures require strong collaboration between forestry, animal health and human health experts, to make use of their respective sectoral knowledge, expertise and institutional mandates. Such a #OneHealth approach, which considers the interlinkages between the health of humans, animals and their shared environment, helps to tackle complex #health challenges. In North Goa, we are working with our partners to support policy makers and local communities to contain the spread of #KFD. How do we achieve this? 👇 🤝 Strengthening the cooperation between stakeholders from the forestry, animal and human health sectors in Goa in their efforts to prevent and fight the spread of KFD. 📑 Scientists and decision-makers work together to increase knowledge of the disease and develop appropriate standard operating procedures which clearly define responsibilities in the event of an outbreak. 💡 Awareness raising about protective measures to prevent contracting the disease. 👉 Read more about our project activities: https://lnkd.in/gGng-qQH Our joint efforts contribute to the protection of both human and animal health. At the same time, they promote the conservation of #biodiversity, which is one of the key focus areas of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) between #India and #Germany. Building Inclusive Cities 👩🦼 🚌 In India, around 2.21% of the population live with disabilities. The lack of accessible transport not only limits mobility, but also access to important services such as education, healthcare and economic opportunities. It is important to build an inclusive transport infrastructure to meet the needs of all. To address these challenges, we have co-created an extensive report on "Inclusive Mobility for Indian Cities". The report takes an in-depth look at the challenges and opportunities for reducing barriers in the Indian transport system. It has been co-authored with persons with disabilities (PWDs) and highlights the obstacles they face in everyday life, such as: ♿️ Inaccessible infrastructure: Ramps, lifts and tactile paths are often not available or difficult to access. 💡 Limited knowledge: Urban planners often lack expertise in designing an inclusive transport infrastructure. 📣 Public awareness gap: The needs of #PWDs are often not understood and addressed. 📊 Lack of available data: Specific data for PWDs is often lacking. This hinders effective urban planning. The report offers a roadmap for building inclusive transport systems for all, outlining proven strategies such as: 🚌 Improved accessibility: Large-scale introduction of low-floor buses, barrier-free public spaces and an inclusive infrastructure for non-motorised vehicles. 🌐 Bridging connectivity gaps: Addressing challenges regarding first and last-mile connectivity between homes and public transport stations. 👥 Stakeholder sensitisation: Providing training of transport staff and policy makers as well as raising awareness among the public. 📱 Leveraging technology: Apps, assistive devices, and real-time data can empower people with disabilities. 🚗 Promoting accessible private vehicles: Fostering the collaboration with car manufacturers to develop more inclusive transport means. Explore how inclusive transport can benefit all citizens, contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The report can be downloaded here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ghCr4EE3 The report was developed under the framework of the Green Urban Mobility Partnership between #India and #Germany. By promoting #GreenMobility, we foster environmentally friendly transport options such as walking, cycling and electric vehicles to reduce pollution and improve sustainability. Manjulaben and her husband Jaisangbhai grow cotton in India. Thanks to the "From Field to Fanshop" initiative, they have switched their production to sustainable organic cotton. During the transition period, they were protected: guaranteed purchase quantities and compensation payments ensured that they did not suffer any losses on the way to organic certification. ⚽ In the initiative, we are cooperating with nine professional football clubs from Germany, Fairtrade International and the textile company BRANDS Fashion GmbH on behalf of the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ). The partners produce and market sustainable fan products and support young people with sports and education programs. This encourages the next generation of cotton farmers already today. #GIZakzente spoke to family businesses from India and those responsible in Germany about this special project: https://lnkd.in/dXABC-4G The fan stores of these football clubs are involved: 1. What can we learn from German forests? 🌳 🌱 German forests are famous for their rich biodiversity, scenic beauty, and historical significance. They cover about one-third of Germany’s land area. To ensure that this remains the case, Germany's forest restoration approach emphasises sustainable forestry, reforestation, and biodiversity conservation, integrating advanced technologies and community involvement. To gain a deeper understanding of this approach, Indian Forest Department Officials from #Gujarat and #Uttarakhand and the National Government embarked on a study tour to #Germany. The tour aimed at analysing the institutional and operational set-up of forestry in the German state of #Hesse and fostered exchange on sustainable practices to forest resilience in the face of #ClimateChange. 📖 💡 Key insights of the study tour: 🍃 Forests fulfil many different functions: They serve as a habitat for millions of species, produce oxygen, prevent soil erosion, offer valuable resources and provide clean water. Consequently, they need to be managed according to their multifunctional nature. 🍃 In order to preserve the rich #biodiversity of our forests, habitat management strategies are crucial. Proven measures include (assisted) natural regeneration and soil moisture conservation. 🍃 #Forests have natural regeneration mechanisms. We can support these by protecting naturally occurring seedlings and young plants as well as creating the optimal conditions for them to grow. 🍃 Interventions which prevent storm damage, mitigate the adverse effects of forest fires and combat drought become more and more important. 🍃 Promoting a diverse and resilient species composition and selecting species that are better adapted to withstand heat and drought are key in #ForestRestoration efforts. Together with our partners, we are committed to restore, conserve, and protect our precious forest and tree cover. By doing so, we contribute to the objectives of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany, that declare #ForestLandscapeRestoration and biodiversity as priority areas of bilateral cooperation. Celebrate with us the International Plastic Bag Free Day 🌊🌍 Imagine over 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic being dumped into our oceans, rivers, and lakes every single day. This staggering reality is the result of our increasing plastic consumption and inadequate waste management. If we don't act now, plastic pollution is expected to triple by 2060. By shifting to more sustainable alternatives, we can make a significant impact. Simple changes in our daily lives, like using reusable bags, bottles, and containers, can help reduce plastic waste and protect our planet for future generations. Together with our partners, we are committed to plastic waste management and promoting sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics (SUPs). This is how we make a difference: 💬 Spread the word: Our campaigns #RACE in Uttar Pradesh and #MeendumManjappai in Tamil Nadu raised awareness about #SUPs, especially plastic bags, and available alternatives. 🛍️ Shop sustainably: We have installed cloth bag vending machines at central locations in various Indian states. The cloth bags are made by Women Self Help Groups (SHGs). 👩 Empower women: To produce and market alternatives to single-use plastic bags, we have built capacities among #SHGs, with a focus on ensuring product quality, better marketing and financial management. 🧴 Reduce, reuse, refill: We have launched Reduce-Reuse-Refill vehicles that offer a selection of eco-friendly alternatives for everyday items, such as cloth bags, bamboo or jute products. By doing so, we make sustainable products more accessible to all. 👕 Get creative, be fashionable: We support the BhuME - Incubation Centre of St. Theresa College, which recycles tailoring waste into vibrant, reusable bags. With our joint efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promote a sustainable lifestyle, we contribute to the objectives of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany. Join us in the fight against plastic pollution! Every small change counts. 💪🌱 #PlasticBagFreeDay #BeatPlasticPollution Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, nukleare Sicherheit und Verbraucherschutz (BMUV) Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India Government of Kerala Government of Tamil Nadu Government of Uttar Pradesh Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH

Cooling India’s Cities – Tamil Nadu is taking the lead 🌡️📈 India's cities are heating up. The extreme heat in summers is one of the biggest challenges for the local government in #TamilNadu, especially in the rapidly growing urban areas. In the state capital #Chennai, cooling alone consumes more than 50 per cent of energy consumption ❄️ ⚡️ To tackle this issue, we have joined hands with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (ऊर्जा दक्षता ब्यूरो) and Tabreed India. We jointly organised a regional workshop on ‘Cooling India’s Cities’ that focused on strategies for integrating district cooling and energy solutions into Tamil Nadu's urban planning. Key discussion points: 💡 Understanding the chances and limitations of District Cooling Systems (DCS): Case studies on greenfield projects and brownfield developments were shared to illustrate DC’s feasibility in the state. 📖 Mapping the policy and practice ecosystem: Discussions revolved around the opportunities and challenges in the current ecosystem and the need for a long-term vision for sustainable cooling solutions. 🧑🏼🤝🧑🏻 Building networks: The workshop fostered collaboration among government officials, utilities, private sector leaders, developers and researchers, all aimed at promoting innovative, flexible district cooling solutions. The workshop marks a significant step towards integrating district cooling and energy solutions into Tamil Nadu's urban planning, addressing both the environmental and economic impacts of urban heat. The project’s activities support the Indo-German cooperation agenda for achieving the global climate targets through enhancing energy efficient cooling systems. Together with our partners, we contribute to the objectives of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany which highlights the importance of a Green Energy Transition.
