"Don't judge a book by it's cover" we say. But it takes a mind like (Pulitzer winner) Jhumpa Lahiri to see meaning, that most of us missed... Here's a quick review of "The Clothing of Books" Lahiri starts the book by talking about her school days in Kolkata (India) and her experiences with school uniforms, birthday party wear... how she felt wearing them.. and how it changed how others reacted to her. The book then beautifully transitions to connecting these experiences to book covers that are indeed, as the title says, clothing of books. Thereon it's a delightful narration of the author's experiences with book covers, of her own books, and the many books she read, gazed at in libraries; and struggles of authors adjusting to book covers designed by publishers. A small, fits-in-your-bag-quick-read, this is a book you would want to have if you.. are an author.. want to be one.. an avid book-reader.. or generally curious about things in life.. just like the author herself. I remember the feeling I had after reading Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies" (won the Pulitzer in 2000 for fiction). I remember thinking of this rather unusual word to describe her writing... "delicious". Lahiri's writing, her choice of subject-matter, has the simplicity and deliciousness of that simple, flavorful, familiar, warm soup you are sipping on a cold day under that snug, comfy blanket. Her writing always gives me that feeling. "The Clothing of Books" made me feel no different. As an author of a self-published and publisher-published book, I have experienced the joy of designing a book cover myself (with help from an illustrator) and the frustration of accepting emotionless book covers handed to you by publishers. I couldn't have been more thankful for someone to have delved into the subject-matter in a way.. that only a beautiful mind like Jhumpa Lahiri can. "The Clothing of Books" is a must-have in your collection. (Wait, did I say that already? 🙂 ) #writing #writer #writingcommunity Penguin Publishing Group Penguin Random House India
