The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a private enterprise owned by the German Government. GIZ implements projects in the field of development cooperation on behalf of its owner - our main commissioning party is the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union and other donors. GIZ is active in over 120 countries worldwide and started operations in Iraq during the humanitarian crisis in 2014 to support refugees, internally displaced people, and their host communities. As a response to the destruction, and loss of economic opportunities and to support the reform process after 2017, GIZ significantly scaled up activities to cover all of Iraq and in various sectors. Together with our partners, we work flexibly to deliver effective solutions that offer people better prospects and sustainably improve their living conditions and towards a future worth living. Our work focuses on three key areas: Reconstruction, Peacebuilding and Governance as well as Economic Development and Life Perspectives. To accomplish our goals, GIZ employs a large number of Iraqi and international experts. We also cooperate with local or international civil society and international organisations as well as specialised service providers from the private sector. All our projects are implemented in partnership with the Iraqi Government or the Regional Government of the Kurdistan Region. The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn (Germany). Years of conflict and trauma in Iraq have led to a surge in mental health struggles, with increasing rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide, particularly among the youth. GIZ Iraq, in collaboration with local and regional actors, works to improve the quality of MHPSS services in the country to ensure that every individual benefits from quality care. For over four years, GIZ and the German Consulate in Erbil have been organising exchange forums on MHPSS topics with more than 40 local and regional actors in Iraq. In these forums, we document and share our learning experiences and review long-term strategic plans for the MHPSS sector, including the previous National Mental Health Strategy draft and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy launched earlier this year. Additionally, practitioners in the region are applying various studies and guidelines developed on behalf of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in their daily work. You can explore these studies and guidelines further by visiting the following link: https://lnkd.in/dikjHgeY #MentalHealth #MentalHealthandPsychosocialSupport #MHPSS #Peacebuilding

The Government of Iraq is fostering private sector and financial market growth - aiming to become less reliant on oil and to create jobs for its youth. Organised by the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Iraq, and other public entities, Iraq's "First National Forum on the Iraqi Private Sector" took place in Baghdad yesterday. Dr. Jonne Bruecher represented GIZ in one of the panel discussions, highlighting our support for the Iraqi Government in developing targeted laws, policies and activities. For example, we support digital skills training courses to help youth secure jobs in the digital economy, as well as entrepreneurship training to work on innovative business models. #JobsBuildFutures #EconomicDevelopment #AccessToFinance

Iraqi women are a key driver of broader economic growth and development. Numerous studies have shown that an inclusive workforce benefits from a wider set of perspectives, skills and experiences, and thus becomes more innovative and resilient. While more and more women in Iraq are entering the labor market and attaining leadership positions, they still face challenges, especially in the private sector and as entrepreneurs. To support women in overcoming these challenges, GIZ has supported setting up mentors’ networks. In Basrah, women professionals have created a network that fosters knowledge exchange, provides practical advice and encourages personal and professional growth since 2019. Experienced professionals help those who have just started their entrepreneurial journeys. We are looking forward to seeing their business ideas and innovations. Way to go! #TheFutureIsFemale #Entrepreneurship #PrivateSectorDevelopment Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Meet Zahraa, who runs an e-form agency in the Al-Zubair District of Basrah: Through her business, she helps people submit online applications to access essential government services, particularly citizens with limited internet access or digital literacy. Zahraa has just finished participating in a series of financial literacy training sessions, where she learned about the advantages of using POS devices for payments, making her transactions quicker, easier, and more secure. In today’s digital economy, understanding mobile money and digital payments is essential for entrepreneurs. To raise awareness of available digital services and explore how businesses can utilise them to increase productivity and revenue, we are collaborating with our partner, Near East Foundation, on a financial literacy program for entrepreneurs in the Basrah and Anbar governorates.   #FinacialInclusion #Entrepreneurship #TeamEurope #TAEUFIQ Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Women and girls deserve a life free from violence – it is their #humanright. Sadly, women all over the world are still subjected to various forms of violence and oppression. Those who survive harm against them deserve dignified, respectful, empathic and holistic care and support. As part of the freshly launched #SPACE Project, we will work with state and civil society institutions in #Iraq to establish more survivor-centered approaches and services, as well as #safespaces that shelter women and girls from retraumatisation, in which the survivors are listened to and believed, and where they can receive appropriate medical care, psychosocial support, and legal assistance. With our partners, we will also engage decision-makers, civil society, traditional leaders, communities as well as men and boys to change the harmful norms and practices that lead to violence against women and girls. Only when we end such violence, we will be able to build a world, a country, a community of peace, safety and equality for all. #Equality changes our world: When women and men can participate equally in politics, the economy and social life, we can build lasting #peace, boost economies, mitigate #climatechange and improve lives for individuals, families and communities. That’s why we will continue to work with our partners in #Iraq – in Government, civil society and the private sector – to achieve more #participation and recognition of women in political decision-making processes, and also in the economy. Together, we offer a variety of trainings and courses to women, including internally displaced persons and refugees. With a broader skill set, they will be able to take up jobs or start businesses to support themselves and their families financially. We will also engage the private sector to put policies in place that break down barriers towards women’s employment. We also support women who are leaders, either in politics, business or their communities. Why do we do this? We believe that all women and men have the right to self-determination, and that countries and communities become more stable, more innovative, healthier and more peaceful when equal opportunities are available to all. We are going into SPACE – for more #equality! 🚀 Our new project “SPACE” – Strengthening Participation, Peaceful Coexistence and Equality in Iraq – was officially launched today. Over the next three years, we will continue to work with state and civil society partners towards achieving stronger #participation of women in politics, the economy and social life – because we believe that an equal society is the key to more peace, prosperity and a healthier life for all. The #SPACE Project, which we implement on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), will focus on a better #representation of women in decision-making processes and the economy, on better #prevention of violence against women and girls, and #protection of survivors of such violence. You want to know more? Stay tuned this week for insights. 💡 #SPACE #equalrights #EndGBV #StrongWomen #BreakTheBias

Living in #peace is not a pipe dream – it is possible even after decades of conflict. Women’s inclusion in #peacebuilding processes is essential for long-term success. However, women still remain often invisible in or sidelined from peace and rehabilitation processes. Over the past five years, GIZ Iraq worked with Government departments, civil society and individuals on the ground to foster peace and strengthen the active and equal participation of women in politics, the economy and society. Today, we celebrate the official closing of this project - called Strengthening the Participation of Women in the Peace and Rehabilitation Process (SPW) - and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – by looking back with gratitude at our achievements: ✅Almost 80 organisations, institutions and Government departments are now better equipped to advocate for stronger participation of women in Iraq. ✅ We implemented eight effective successful ways to strengthen the participation of women, ranging from policies on political level to empowering adolescent girls and their mothers, from capacity building for journalists, women in sports and civil society to holistic engagement with survivors of violence. ✅ Over 3,700 women and girls participated in courses and initiatives to boost their social and professional skills. They are now better equipped to find jobs or get an income. We also supported almost 3,000 Yazidi women with life skills and psychosocial assistance.   ✅ With our partners, we developed digital approaches and PR campaigns to break down stereotypes about women and men. We also worked with journalists to counter harmful stereotypes, and sensitized religious, tribal and female leaders for violence against women and girls. Whilst the project has ended, the journey continues. Stay tuned this week for exciting updates on how we will support participation, peaceful coexistence and equality in Iraq. 🚀 #SPW #StrongWomen #BreakTheBias #Equality4Peace
