Hringvarmi
Agriculture, Construction, Mining Machinery Manufacturing
We harness excess heat from data centers and channel it into purpose-built biomes for food production.
About us
Hringvarmi is a circular Ag tech startup co-founded by Justine Vanhalst and Dr. Alexandra Leeper. The Hringvarmi solution, harnesses excess heat from data centres and channels it into purpose-built biomes that provide space and infrastructure for controlled environment food production. Our solution aims to solve multiple intersectional challenges with one circular economy solution while creating a vibrant community for food producers. The solution is being test-driven in Iceland, a country where 80% of the fresh fruits and vegetables are imported, a significant carbon footprint and where a sustainable minded data centre sector is flourishing.

🌞 What a great way to kick-off Hringvarmi activities after the summer and enjoy a little late season sunshine in #iceland 🌞 🥗 We had the pleasure to sit down today with Nikhilesh Mohanty of Arctic Edge Consultants and talk about our strategy for the next year! 🥗 💡 There is so much to be gained in sitting down and discussing the concrete steps to take when building and scaling a business that getting expert advise, and sharing ideas out loud to really hear where the gaps are is invaluable - Thank you Arctic Edge Consultants💡 #strategy #innovation #impact #startup #advise Alexandra Leeper PhD Justine Vanhalst KLAK - Icelandic Startups Auðna - Technology Transfer Office Iceland Norðanátt Drift EA Iceland Ocean Cluster Thor Sigfusson PhD Nordic Ignite FKA - Félag kvenna í atvinnulífinu Homeward Bound Projects

🎉 On the day of Women Right's in Iceland, June 19th, we had the pleasure of being awarded FrumkvöðlaAuður grant from Kvika banki hf. design to support women entrepreneurs. 🛠 This grant is a much needed contribution towards the deployment of our prototype this summer. 🛠 📜 A bit of history: In 1915, on this day, Icelandic women won the right to vote! Far ahead of many European countries. In comparison, the Hringvarmi founder's birth country, in the UK this was achieved not so long after in 1918 (Alexandra Leeper PhD) however in France it was not until 1944 😱 more than 30 years after Iceland! (Justine Vanhalst) 💪 Funding vehicles like this are still necessary to bridge the gender gap in startup financing. 🙏😊 Takk fyrir okkur! 🍃 So exciting to see the rapidly developing role of controlled environment food production and the growing importance agri-tech for global food security and reduced carbon footprint 🍃 Great article from CNN on some of the large scale actors in the this sector including the exciting Gigafarm that is a great example of #circulareconomy in agri-tech. Image from Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) and CNN article with link below in comments. As Hringvarmi develops our MVP this summer we are considering closely the lessons, values and circular approaches already on the market to optimise our solution and create unique circular value from #datacenter #excesseheat. We are excited to share our recent participation in Atvinnumá Kvenna grant program - a wonderful support program available in Iceland that supports female founded companies with good business ideas. This program provided the team, Justine Vanhalst and Alexandra Leeper PhD to attend business plan and finance plan program that has prepared Hringvarmi for our ambitious next steps to develop our MVP this year- to turn #dataintodinner and make waste heat from data centers accessible to food producers. Thank you for a great program Einar Sigvaldason and to all the other awesome companies we had the chance to meet! The Hringvarmi team had a great time at DATACLOUD ESG SUMMIT 2024 in #Iceland. It was exciting to be connecting with leading data centres companies around the world on the topic of sustainability! The topic of #scope3emissions was a common theme - these are the indirect emissions that occur along a companies value chain - of which excess heat is such a challenge - by utilizing this excess heat - this growing industry can improve its energy efficiency and even be a source of added value to their communities. At Hringvarmi, we want to help make that happen! Attending this event allowed us to have invaluable conversations to ensure the Generation 1 MVP we are developing meets the need of this rapidly evolving sector! #innovation #datacentres #circulareconomy #sustainability #ESGs Datacenter Forum iMasons Climate Accord Legrand Michael J. 📣 Thrilled to announce the kick-off of a new project for Hringvarmi funded by Orkuveitan fund! 📣 In this project, we will be mapping the scale of the excess heat from #datacenter challenge in #Iceland - and elucidating the environmental benefit of capturing this heat for food production in our #Hringvarmi modules. We will also be developing our Generation1 MVP in collaboration with atNorth! ✨ This is a great step toward our mission to drive innovative circular economic food production and a more sustainable data center industry! So yesterday...this happened 👇 I discovered that I was part of the amazing list of '650+ Women in Climate to Know' by ClimateHack 🤩😱🥹 Like seriously, I was randomly scrolling through the list as I received their newsletter, impressed by the many incredible names listed. And frankly, women I *really* admire a LOT: 🇩🇪 Lubomila Jordanova - CEO and Founder at Plan A Building a carbon accounting software to help businesses decarbonise and be ESG compliant. 🇹🇭 Alina Truhina - CEO and Managing Partner at The Radical Fund Funding early-stage startups across climate-adaptation and resilience in emerging markets. 🇧🇪 Elena Doms - Head of Earth Plus Cleaning and restoring polluted and marginal lands with nature-based solutions. 🇸🇬 Carolin Barr K. - Founder of susGain An engagement app focusing on driving behavioural change within communities whilst measuring the impact created. 🇸🇬 Christine Amour-Levar - Co-founder of Investors for Climate Harnessing Capital for Climate Solutions. I could list many more... but the list is just too long! 😅 Seeing my name amongst these women made me feel extremely proud, happy and excited at the same time. 🥹 Women deserve more shoutouts, more spotlight, more love. They deserve to be SEEN. So thank you ClimateHack team for doing this incredible curation. 💚 If you want to get inspired, follow and support incredible women in the Climate Space, head out to the FULL list here 👇 https://lnkd.in/erUjGTxr (Airtable link with ALL the names available in the article) Thank you thank you thank you to the whole team at ClimateHack and a special shoutout to Laura Hodgkiss and Emilie Dellecker. 💚 #womeninclimate

👌 Thank you Business France Nordics for sharing this event! What a great insight on the #DataCenters industry in the the #Nordics and in #France 💡 Hringvarmi has a great interest in the heat reuse of data centres to harness it and channel it into a controlled environment to grow food locally. 🍃 It was refreshing to see that there is a big emphasis in Danmark in heat reuse from DC. [fr] What about France? One of our founders is French and we would love to see what is done there and get some insight! Anythoughtst Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers? 🤝 This event is a great way for us to broaden our network and learn so much on the market of DC in Denmark and France.
