Now, the historic Casa Degli Italiani has been transformed into a cutting-edge learning environment, where the past meets the present in a captivating space that celebrates Spanish culture. At the Expanish academy, students experience an immersive journey that combines tradition and modernity, in a setting designed to inspire. The studio El Departamento has completed an intervention on one of the most emblematic buildings in Barcelona: the historic Casa Degli Italiani, now home to the Expanish language academy. This project merges the rich architectural heritage of the building with contemporary design, enhancing its historical significance and transforming it into a unique learning space. The concept is based on a harmonious dialogue between the old and the new, preserving the essence of the building while adapting it to the needs of a modern academy. The spaces have been designed to evoke Spanish culture: the common areas, called “Tapas,” reflect the tradition of sharing and conversation, while the “Nap Spaces” offer a relaxing corner in a dynamic and stimulating environment. One noteworthy example of this shift is Adidas' West Hollywood store in Los Angeles, which reflects the growing trend of ‘bold and fantastical’ retail spaces. This location stands out as a forward-looking, attention-grabbing environment, where industrial rawness merges with futuristic design elements, creating a unique setting that blurs the lines between shopping and experience. The store’s impactful and experimental design marks a new creative chapter for the brand. I find this project incredibly innovative: a doughnut-shaped weather balloon and an intricately woven timber tunnel, set in the rural Zhejiang province in China. Known as Woven Gateway and Sky Ring, these two structures are designed not only to enhance the visitor experience but to do so in a way that respects and complements the natural landscape. Commissioned as part of the development project for the Chuan Yan Nineteen Peaks Scenic Area, the two installations use minimalist yet impactful designs that enrich the area without overwhelming it. The tunnel, a 20-meter-long passage named Woven Gateway, creates a dramatic entrance along the village’s main road, framed with locally sourced black slate tiles. This design approach by architecture practice Line+ Studio, ensures that it not only stands as a landmark but also seamlessly blends into the environment. Beyond its aesthetic contribution, the tunnel helps stabilize the road from erosion due to heavy rains. Nearby, Sky Ring floats gracefully over an outdoor gathering space, functioning both as a striking public symbol and as a practical weather balloon. Tethered above the scenic landscape, it emits color-changing lights at night, adding a magical glow to the area. I've had the chance to talk a few times about sneakers in relation to projects that I found both interesting and innovative. This time, it’s about a footwear start-up that begins with a core concept of sustainability and then builds an entire world around it, from production methods to collaborations, all while establishing a truly unique identity. While many fashion companies claim to be committed to sustainability, the Bordeaux-based sneaker brand Zèta truly lives up to the promise by turning agricultural waste into shoes. Founded by designer and entrepreneur Laure Babin, Zèta uses agricultural by-products to craft their footwear. Everything in their production chain, including the boxes each pair is shipped in, comes from recycled materials. A few months ago, through a partnership with Nespresso for their Re collection, they incorporated coffee production waste into their designs. Their latest model, Olea, features a material called Oleatex, which is developed in Turkey and made from the crushed remnants of olives left over from olive oil production. Their next project is a pair of 100% biodegradable sneakers with seeds embedded in the soles.
