The Big Ten Conference, in partnership with Abbott, has organized what might be the most significant college competition ever held. To address the severe blood supply shortage in the United States—a need that becomes even more critical during times of crisis like these—"The We Give Blood Drive" offers a $1 million prize to advance student and community health to the college that collects the most donations. The winning school will be announced at the 2024 Big Ten Football Championship Game on December 7, 2024. As of today, University of Nebraska-Lincoln is leading the competition, followed by Indiana University Indianapolis and Purdue University. Did you know that September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month in the US? 🩸 Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder in which red blood cells may become sickle-shaped and harden. This causes complications including chronic severe and unpredictable pain, anemia, swelling, fatigue. SCD is not contagious, but there is no universal cure. An estimated 100,000 people in the US live with the disease. People with SCD can live full lives, and blood transfusions are one of the most critical treatments for patients. Once again, donations can truly make a difference—especially while the American Red Cross has declared an emergency blood shortage after its national blood inventory plummeted more than 25% in July.
