This October, the global space community gathered in Milan for historic 75th IAC2024, a week packed with insightful presentations, collaborative discussions, and meaningful business opportunities. The European Space Agency - ESA commercialisation team had the privilege of hosting a session dedicated to promoting the ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) Network in Italy, part of ESA and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana's commitment to supporting space-focused entrepreneurship in Italy. The ESA BIC Network continues to grow, providing essential resources like funding, technical expertise, access to finance and business mentorship to start-ups, aiming to commercialise space technologies. From the Regione Lazio to recent expansions in Turin, Brindisi, Padua and Milan, the Italian ESA BICs are positioning start-ups to drive innovation and create impactful solutions across sectors. Here the key highlights of the ESA BIC Network session: - The dialogue featured Matteo Coletta, Head of sector - Study centre and NewSpace economy, who shared Italian Space Agency's steadfast commitment to empowering space entrepreneurs in Italy with bold and risk taking strategies. - Luca del Monte, Head of ESA’s Commercialisation Services Department, emphasised the growing role of ESA BICs in fostering collaboration and bridging the gap between space technology and commercial markets. - Ritesh Jain as the moderator, who shared an overview of the ESA BICs' 20-year journey, tracing their evolution and impact across Europe. This was followed by presentations from the dedicated managers of each ESA BIC in Italy, along with ESA Technology Broker in Italy, who showcased their programmes, resources, and the success stories of startups they have supported: - ESA BIC Lazio (Lazio Innova) - ESA BIC Turin - ESA BIC Brindisi - ESA BIC Milan - ESA BIC Padua - ESA Technology Broker Italy (STAM S.r.l.) The audience left inspired by the stories of entrepreneurs making strides in fields ranging from Earth Observation to sustainable energy solutions, all supported by the strong foundation ESA BICs provide.
