It was an honour to be able to present Daniela Sawyer's and my research into industrial robotic arm health monitoring at the IEEE CASE 2024 conference last month. It was eye-opening to see so much amazing research being conducted in so many sectors of automation. We had the pleasure of participating in the IEEE CASE 2024 event in Bari, where Linda Napoletano from Deep Blue hosted a workshop on human automation teaming. The Human-AI Teaming paradigm transforms traditional human-machine interaction into a dynamic synergy between two complementary intelligences. The primary goal is to create teams where human and #AI strengths intertwine to achieve common objectives more effectively and efficiently. Her presentation focused on the human perspective while designing automation. IEEE CASE 2024 was a wonderful experience! Thanks and congratulations to the organizers Mariagrazia Dotoli Raffaele Carli and all the others for the fantastic work done in shaping a highly engaging and flawless conference. Social events were truly outstanding! Our workshop on Soft Robotics for automation 5.0 was also a great success! Co-organized with Maeda Shingo Federico Renda Francesco Giorgio-Serchi. Had a lineup of awesome speakers who shaped an inspiring discussion on how soft robotics technologies can contribute to advance ubiquitous automation. 🌟 Excited to Share Our Recent Work at IEEE CASE 2024 in Italy! 🌟 I’m thrilled to have participated in the 2024 IEEE 20th International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE 2024), held in Bari, a beautiful city in Italy. As one of the flagship conferences under IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), this year’s event focused on Automation 5.0, bringing together cutting-edge research and innovations. The keynote talks were particularly inspiring, providing deep insights into the future of automation. I had the honor of co-chairing one of the regular sessions and presenting our latest research titled "Frontal Target Approaching and Height Control of Micro Air Vehicles using Multi-perspective Optical Flow Observables." Our work addresses the challenges faced by micro air vehicles in accurately estimating forward distance and height for autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments. Inspired by the navigational strategies of tiny flying insects like honeybees, we proposed a novel approach using optical flow observables from multiple perspectives to estimate both depth and height estimation during flight. The results from both simulations and flight tests have validated our method, marking a significant step forward in this field. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education for their support through the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme, and to IEEE RAS for the travel grant that made this journey possible. It was a great experience to present a part of our research about Microrobotics Automaton at IEEE CASE 2024 in Bari, Italy. Although the topic of bio-based fibers’ characterization using microrobotics was unfamiliar for the audiance, our hardware and software developments attracted the participants. Once again, it showed me that robotic manipulation and failure management could have totally different challenges when we go from Macro-Scale to Micro-Scale. Furthermore, participating as the chair of a session (Automation at Micro-nano Scales) helped me to see a conference from a new point of view. From August 28 to September 1 Marco Perin and Massimiliano Bertoni participated at the 2024 IEEE 20th International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (IEEE CASE 2024) in Bari 🇮🇹. 📄 Marco presented his paper titled "Star-Shaped Tilted Hexarotor Maneuverability: Analysis of the Role of the Tilt Cant Angles" which provides an in-depth analysis of how tilt cant angles affect the force subspace in star-shaped tilted hexarotors, introducing new performance metrics and design guidelines to optimize robustness and maneuverability. 📄 Massimiliano presented his paper "Autonomous Quadrotor Landing on Inclined Surfaces Using an Actuated Skids System Guided by a Multi-Zone ToF Sensor" which presents a novel quadrotor mechanism with actuated skids and a multi-zone Time-of-Flight sensor, enabling stable take-off and landing on inclined surfaces with improved maneuverability and stability, validated through realistic simulations. For the SPARCS group, the #CASE2024 experience has been a fantastic opportunity to gather fresh ideas and perspectives. We look forward to leveraging these insights for future collaborations, driving innovation and progress in control theory, robotics, and autonomous systems. Excited to attend IEEE CASE 2024 in Bari, Italy last week! During my PhD journey, I didn’t have the chance to attend in-person academic conferences, which was something I always wished I could experience. This was truly fulfilling to engage with the academic community face-to-face. Reconnecting with my advisors Kira Barton and Dawn Tilbury, as well as former lab colleagues (mentors) Ilya Kovalenko and Efe Balta made the experience even more special! The moments like these remind me of the value of personal connections in research and academia. Expecting what’s next!
