The International School of Crystallography (ISCoC) is a Scientific Session of the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (EMFCSC) devote to promote structural sciences in the scientific community. The School was officially started in 1974 (Prof. Michael Woolfson was the Scientific Director of this very first Course on Direct Methods), under the scientific direction of Nobel Laureate Dorothy Hodgkin, and since then courses have been organized nearly every year. In 1978 the scientific direction of the School has been assumed by Professor Sir Tom Blundell, FRS, (Cambridge University, UK), who held the position until 2023, when Dr. Giovanna Scapin was appointed to the position. Professor Sir Tom Blundell remains deeply involved with the Scientific organization of the School as Director Emeritus. Topics cover the most current trends in all aspects of structural sciences, from methods to applications. The Director of the individual courses is nominated by the ISCoC scientific director, and is responsible for selecting one or more co-directors, inviting the lecturers and planning the scientific program. The Director and co-directors are assisted by an Organizing committee which includes the Executive Secretary (Dr. Annalisa Guerri), the School Treasurer (Prof. Paola Spadon) and an IT team (currently lead by Fabio Nicoli and Dr. Claudio Catalano). In addition, local assistance during the Course is provided by a team of "Orange Scarves". The School is held in Erice, a small town at the extreme north-west corner of Sicily, on the top of a mountain (751 m, 2464 feet) above sea level), about 12 km/7.5 miles from the seaside and 96 km/60 miles from Palermo. This special location provides incredible views and a unique atmosphere difficult to find anywhere else and impossible to forget.

We were very saddened to learn today about the passing of Richard Pauptit, a well known and highly respected protein crystallographer, but also an integral part of the structural biology and structure based drug design courses of the ISCoC. His enthusiasm and passion will be forever remembered. Our thoughts are with his family and friends https://lnkd.in/eN-zunR3

Malvern Panalytical has been sponsoring the last International School of Crystallography in Erice dedicated to powder diffraction. But we have done much more than supporting financially this school. Thank to the generous support from our CEO Mark Fleiner, we have covered the travel and registration costs of 3 African students among which Afolabi Yemisi Tokunbo, giving them the opportunity to be trained in one of the best school on crystallography. Other students were A. Essé AGOSSOU and Victor Odari. Today, I had the pleasure to receive the following feedback from Afolabi: "I am very thankful to Malvern Panalytical for your generous funding support to attend the 2024 Erice International School of Crystallography. The educational and networking experience with other distinguished scholars in the field of crystallographers at Erice was an invaluable experience that will greatly enhance my knowledge and skills in crystallography, and it will have a lasting impact on my career. Your commitment to supporting the professional development of researchers like myself is deeply appreciated. Thank you again for your generosity. I look forward to sharing my experiences and learnings from the Erice School in my country." This is where we can make a difference: promoting education and trying to make a positive impact on someone's life. Finally, a big thank you to the selection committee who has selected the students: Michele Zema, Marielle Agbahoungbata and Thierry d' Almeida
