The Materials Science and Technology (STM) group is part of the Department of Civil, Computer Science, and Aeronautical Technologies Enginnering at the University of Roma Tre which was selected by the Ministry from among the 180 winning Departments of Excellence in the selection for "Departments of Excellence 2018-2022" of MIUR for the area “08 - Civil Engineering and Architecture”. The group is made up of four staff units (a full professor, an associate professor, a researcher, a specialized technician) and a team, funded mainly through research projects, composed of about 5 units with the following profiles: two PhDs , three PhD students; the group is also assisted by undergraduates in Mechanical Engineering, Bio-Engineering and Aeronautics, who are carrying out their thesis, engaged in training activities related to research projects supported by industrial companies. The group boasts a wide range of state-of-the-art tools for microstructural, compositional and mechanical characterization that are integrated and complementary, on which methods and techniques for analyzing and manipulating original and innovative materials have been developed. Among these it is worth mentioning electron beam microscopies (in scanning - SEM and in transmission - TEM -), ion microscopy (FIB) and stylus microscopy (AFM), nanomechanical and surface energy characterization, ray diffraction X. Characteristics such as durability and operating behavior can then be simulated thanks to other available resources, such as a salt spray chamber and a newly developed tribometer developed and patented by the group itself.

Each one was meticulously prepared using our new Helios 5CX Thermo Fisher Scientific system, harnessing the power of semiautomatic magic. ⚡ It took us just 5 hours of focused ion beam (FIB) wizardry to slice through complex multi-layer coatings and create these masterpieces for HR-TEM. It was a pleasure to host Prof. Rostislav Daniel, Associate Professor from Montanuniversität Leoben and expert in PVD deposition technologies. Prof. Daniel has dramatically supported our Materials Science and Technology group at Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Informatica e delle Tecnologie Aeronautiche in advancing our knowledge and innovative use of the PVD system in our lab. He also delivered a highly insightful seminar on the design possibilities of PVD coatings for multi-functionality, focusing on the influence of process parameters and microstructural considerations. Working with Rostislav has been a wonderful experience—he’s a brilliant researcher and a great friend of our team. #PVD #materials #innovation #RomaTre #research #collaboration

The Materials Science and Technology group from Roma Tre University participated in NanoInnovation 2024 (September 9-13). Prof. Marco Sebastiani chaired the "Stress in Thin Films" session, which covered advanced techniques and recent findings. Edoardo Rossi presented novel approaches for residual stress characterization in nano-structured coatings via #FocusedIonBeam technologies, and Saqib Rashid discussed new results into stress measurement in micro- and nano-devices (MEMS). Both contributions are part of the nanoMECommons project.
