Established in 1998, Ubisoft Milan is the creative studio that developed Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Chi siamo

Established in 1998, over the years Ubisoft Milan has contributed to the development of some of the most important Ubisoft IPs such as Rayman®, Beyond Good & Evil®, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®. After having pioneered motion-controls with titles such as MotionSports™ and Raving Rabbids® Alive and Kicking, Ubisoft Milan has collaborated to four installments of the Just Dance® series and has applied its skills to Assassin’s Creed® III Liberation, Assassin’s Creed® IV Black Flag® and Assassin’s Creed® Rogue. In recent years, the collaboration with Ubisoft Paris has led Ubisoft Milan to contribute to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands and Breakpoint, and to conceive and work in partnership on Mario + Rabbids® Kingdom Battle - a Nintendo Switch® exclusive turn-based combat adventure, featuring a team up of iconic Nintendo and Ubisoft characters that join forces to save the Mushroom Kingdom. After the global success of Mario + Rabbids® Kingdom Battle, Ubisoft Milan has worked on a massive DLC of the game featuring Donkey Kong, one of the most appreciated Nintendo® characters of all time. In October 2022, we released a new chapter in the Mario + Rabbids® saga: the critically acclaimed Sparks of Hope, and we will support the game with 3 DLCs that will be released throughout 2023.

Selvaggia Salvati’s picture says it all: “I joined Ubisoft Milan because I wanted to be trained to become a cool Assassin!”. Jokes aside (but she wrote that with a question mark, so take it with a pinch of salt…) “I joined the team because after the job interviews, I knew I found the right place where I could grow as a person and as a professional, learning from experts in the various areas of game development, while working in a very creative and friendly environment”. And after more than 5 years she is still here, as a full-fledged Producer. It’s been a while since her first day with us, when “I didn’t eat breakfast because I was so excited and eager to start… and I spent most of the morning starving. But I also had so many new colleagues to talk to and meet. Lots of questions and processes to learn. Everything went by very fast, and I couldn’t wait to get back the next day!”. Check the gallery for some additional tips for future Producers, but here’s a key suggestion for them: “It's not just about hitting milestones, building roadmaps and balancing budgets; how you lead, communicate, and resolve conflicts matters just as much”.

Some of our team members are Magic: The Gathering hardcore fans and players, so when the Assassin’s Creed set was released, decks magically appeared in our office! They also met in the evening for a couple of matches, and the winner got some extra coveted booster packs! Thanks Wizards for the gifts!

“I always loved Ubisoft and Nintendo IPs. Knowing that a Mario game was in development in Milan made me send immediately my resume!”. This is how Andrea Peretti’s journey in Ubisoft Milan as Gameplay Programmer started 4 years ago. “My first task was the creation of a debug menu for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, that was used to fix bugs and errors in the game. I then worked on other features, like the formation system and Beep-0 abilities, most of which were made working alongside other colleagues. It was teamwork in its purest form, and I really love this part of my job”. What Andrea thinks should help newcomers that want to join the video games industry? “Go to game jams! It allows you to create a game in only two days, learn new things and network a lot! You should never stop learning”.

We attended IEEE Conference on Games 2024 and it has been a very formative experience! Our Narrative Designer Elisa Rosso and Alice Rendell, Senior Narrative Systems Designer at Massive Entertainment - A Ubisoft Studio, presented one of our internal development tools to an international audience of researchers and practitioners. It gave us the opportunity to explain why it was created and how helpful it is, especially for narrative designers that use it every day, exchanging opinions and ideas in an academic environment quite new for us. Thank you to IEEE, Politecnico di Milano, all the attendees, and to Professors Dario Maggiorini and Daniele Loiacono for inviting us!

Davide Cavuoto joined Ubisoft Milan more than 3 years ago, “because my objective was to work in AAA production since the beginning of my studies to become a game designer. After a period in an indie game company, I took the chance as soon as I saw the opportunity by sending an application for an open position in the Game Design team, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made”. He’s currently a Level Designer, but “at the beginning I was in charge of the NPCs behaviors implementation for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. I was really scared because I was working with a completely new engine, but in the end it clicked and I soon became the product owner of the exploration AI in the game!”. What’s should an industry newcomer do when looking for an opportunity in gaming? “Keep moving. Even if you land a job, keep learning, reading, scripting, doing. As game developers, we create experiences and to create them we must first get real-life experiences”. You can find more details on what Davide worked on in the photo gallery!

It is not easy to write this. It is tougher than many of the bosses we have battled together, and this time there is no cover or Spark to help us!    After more than 20 years, Davide Soliani and Ubisoft Milan part ways, as friends. Davide and the teams at Ubisoft Milan still share the same quest -- to make gamers have fun, scream with delight, and dream – but we will now be on a different path.    Before the tears at E3 2017, the announcement of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and the crazy idea that brought to life the game that changed all for us, there is a story of a young Davide that, after seeing a little kid playing with a Game Boy on the Milan metro, chose his new life mission: bringing joy and fun to people through video games.    That mission drove him and our team through multiple projects and, in the end, made the impossible possible: a series of games and DLCs with some of the most iconic characters of all time.    We wish Davide the best and we can’t wait to play with his future endeavors. And we hope that he will like what we will work on in the future, as we will definitely keep in mind his best teaching: surprise players with unexpected experiences!    “Don’t cry, Ubisoft man!” We joked with Davide a lot about that meme.    But now it’s our time to cry. ❤️

Davide Donghi is with Ubisoft Milan since 2016, a journey that brought him to become the Lead Animator of the studio. A journey that actually started way before, since he was a child. “Growing up, games provided me with a source of joy, wonder, and connection. They ignited my imagination and allowed me to explore new worlds, and I want to create even better transformative experiences for others. Games have the power to inspire, foster empathy, and bring people together, and I'm passionate about being part of an industry that has the potential to shape and enrich lives in such a profound way”. But why Ubisoft Milan? “I wanted to be part of the creation of engaging, authentic, and meaningful experiences that leave wonder, awareness, and a positive impact, inspiring curiosity and connection in the hearts of people and the artistic world...so in Ubisoft Milan, I found many people aligned with my values and goals, looking back, especially with the feedbacks we received from the community, I can say that we had a positive impact on many levels, so I guess we are on the right path!”. To those that want to start a similar journey, what would Davide say? “Cultivating curiosity and an open mind will not only make you a better game developer but also a true innovator in this mutable field. Embrace the unknown and other people's perspectives, and you'll discover endless possibilities waiting to be unlocked”. Davide worked on so many different animations, but he wanted to share one in particular: “This is my very first production shot! Year after year it's one of those experiences that reminds me how much it's important to live fully in the present while moving forward, no matter your speed, effort, or else… Every day you have a chance to add something to your life and move on another step in building your own self”.

Last Friday we attended this year’s edition of New Game Designer, an event where students of Università degli Studi di Milano and Politecnico di Milano, after months of hard work, pitch and show their project to a jury made of members of the biggest video games companies in Italy. We were among them and it’s always a pleasure to meet young creatives, offering them feedback and suggestions, and hear them explain their vision with so much passion and energy. Thank you as always for having us Dario Maggiorini, Laura Anna Ripamonti and Davide Gadia!
