Thanks to UNICRI - United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, for one of my favourite weeks of the year! To teach at the LLM of Transnational Crime and Justice in #Turin. As always, it is a great group of students reflecting a vibrant community of your lawyers who are passionate about peace in international law.

What happens when five pioneering EU-funded projects come together for a high-stakes intelligence mission? An interactive scenario where participants step into intelligence roles to tackle a complex cyber-enabled terrorism threat. At the margins of the COTER ( Council of the European Union Working Party on Terrorism - International Aspects), I had the privilege of designing and moderating a side event titled Technologies and the Fight Against Global Threats, where we facilitated an immersive intelligence briefing. Together with the EU Institute for Security Studies SCOPE team, the European Commission Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI), and the five involved projects, we created an interactive scenario featuring The Nexus Syndicate—a shadowy network that blends extremist ideology with organized crime, using cyber and AI tools to recruit, spread disinformation, and destabilize societies. The mission centered around an imminent cyber-attack on the Port of Havenborough, illustrating the cascading effects of cyber disruptions on global security and trade. The event showcased how five groundbreaking EU-funded projects are tackling these threats from multiple dimensions: A joint initiative of United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and INTERPOL: CT Tech+, Enhancing law enforcement’s capabilities to track digital footprints and detect cyber threats early on. A joint initiative of UNICRI - United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and INTERPOL: AI-POL, Supporting the deployment of AI-driven policing tools responsibly. A joint initiative of Europol and Eurojust : SIRIUS, Strengthening cross-border access to electronic evidence for international crime investigations. Council of Europe: GLACY+, Aiming to strengthen the capacities of states worldwide to apply legislation on cybercrime and electronic evidence, enhancing their abilities for effective international cooperation in this area. And EU CyberNet, Bolstering cyber capacities, including maritime security, to protect critical infrastructure. This event was as exciting to moderate as it was to design, and I truly enjoyed bringing this concept to life with the SCOPE team, FPI, and the involved projects. 🚨 Strengthening #Multilateralism in Action! Pathfinders had the opportunity to contribute to the first-ever Crime, Justice & Security Training Programme for Police Advisors and Diplomatic Personnel, organized by UNICRI - United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and UNODC, and hosted by the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations in New York 🇸🇪. Margaret Williams led a session on #SDG16Plus, the global targets for peace, justice, and inclusion, highlighting its critical role in security, governance, and international cooperation. 🇪🇺 The European Union and 🇺🇳 UNICRI have launched Phase II of the “Support to Eastern Partnership Countries to Enhance Asset Recovery” to reinforce efforts in tracing, confiscating, and recovering illicit assets across Armenia 🇦🇲, Azerbaijan 🇦🇿, Georgia 🇬🇪, Moldova 🇲🇩, and Ukraine 🇺🇦. This initiative strengthens officials’ expertise through: 🔹 Technical assistance and legal guidance 🔹 Case-specific mentoring and advanced training 🔹 Peer-to-peer tutoring and capacity building 🔹 Support for the transparent management & social reuse of recovered assets 📢 The initiative will leverage synergies with officials across the EaP countries and international actors, including Europol and European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL).
